Miller, author of Law School Confidential and Business School Confidential has teamed with Bissel, a doctor of emergency medicine, for the latest entry. A guide for readers thinking about attending medical school, or in the early stages of beginning an M.D., Miller and Bissell begin upbeat: "It's hard to argue with a career choice that allows you to save lives, or at least improve them every day." The arduous and complicated seven-to-ten year path they lay out, however, is another story. Reading the book straight through may do more to discourage readers than to help them on their way, but Miller and Bissell are clear and thorough, from undergraduate pre-med work to med school applications to grueling med school coursework to the various standardized tests, clinical duties and internships until, finally, the all-important career choice: where to spend your residency. Comments from several young practicing doctors ("Med School Confidential Mentors") don't illuminate much, and the authors can resort to banal generalizations that are little help: "The key is not knowing what you want to do, but what kind of person you want to become.". This book reveals very little of the personal, emotional journey of becoming a doctor, but as an overview of the academic rigors of the med student life, this guide is top-notch.

About the Author

Robert H. Miller graduated from Yale University in 1993 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was senior editor of the Law Review, in 1998. He is presently a trial lawyer at Sheehan, Phinney, Bass & Green in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he specializes in intellectual-property and commercial litigation. He is the author of the critically acclaimed grad school preparatory books Law School Confidential, Business School Confidential, and the hot new college preparatory book Campus Confidential.

Dan Bissell, M.D., graduated cum laude from Middlebury College in 1993 and from the University of Colorado School of Medicine as an Adler Scholar in 2002. He recently completed his residency in emergency medicine at the Maine Medical Center. During residency, he received the Gold Foundation Award as Resident Teacher of the Year and was appointed chief resident of the emergency medicine program. He is now in practice in Portland, Oregon.

medical student or want to be one? you need this book

I loved this book, I start this year and I was kind of confused since the whole college regimen is different now and I needed an overall outline or overview of what to expect what should I do, this book covers it. although it mainly speaks about medicine in the US which can be different than other countries regarding admission, test, and curriculum outlines for preclinical years. for me its system blocks, like cardiology block will cover all anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, ..etc. then next block is another system. but in the book they explained as first year would be anatomy biochem physiology embryology..etc and second year pharmacology pathology..
but I've benefited form the learning techniques and time management tips and overall medical student lifestyle

Great read for someone interested in med school

I bought this book with the hopes that it could be of some insight as to whether or not med school would be for me. After reading it, I can say that it was that and much more. Not only did I get what seems to be an acurate portrayal of what it takes to get into med school and the road to being a doctor, but also extremely practical ideas and tools to help be successful on every major step along the way. The writing was clear and concise and seemed to be geared towards an extreme usefulness for a serious med student or potential med student. I will be applying for med school and reading this book along the way to help me excel through it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone seriously considering med school or who is in med school and would like some useful pointers on how to choose your clinical rotations, pre-pare well for the USMLEs, apply for residencies, etc.

I am in my first year of medical school and I still fully endorse this book. I can finally say from the other side of the application, that it was very helpful in the application process. I have lent out this book to a number of friends interested in the idea of pursuing medicine and they seem to have appreciated the content as well.

The version I reviewed five years ago was so savagely abridged, you only really got the facts, and facts weren't TE's strong suit. Seven Pillars has been called a novel travelling under the cover of autobiography. I prefer the 1930s reviewer who said 'Lawrence has a novelist's eye for detail, a poet's command of the language, an adventurer's heart, a soldier's great story and his memory and intellect are at least as good as all those.' 'The heat of Arabia came out like a drawn sword and struck us speechless.' No one captures the beauty, the cruelty and immensity of the desert and its tribes as brilliantly as Lawrence. Thanks to his extensive prewar travels in Syria and Mesopotamia, he understood their manners, their mentality, their language. He was fluent in Arabic, Greek, Turkish and Syriac as well as French, German and Latin. In native dress he could pass as a Circassian shepherd. His recruitment by British intelligence in Cairo was inevitable, likewise his subsequent mission to unite the numerous warring Arab factions against the Turks and their German allies. In 1916 he had a price of £15,000 (£1m in today's money) on his head. But when, having led the Arab camel cavalry across the Negev desert to victory at Aqaba, Lawrence on a recce in Turkish-held Deraa was randomly taken in for questioning, the Bey accepted his Circassian shepherd cover story. He was flogged and gang-raped before being thrown out normal practice. Had he been recognised, death would have been a mercy. It's a long book but there's no way that the abridged version would have inspired David Lean to such cinematic heights. Lawrence was a complex man brave, intelligent, passionate, a reluctant hero deeply troubled by his divided British/Arab loyalties. Foundations of conflict

It is difficult to describe the experience of reading The Seven Pillars. It is by turns beautiful and ugly. It is military history. It is a subjective view provided by a man very much of his time. It is an apology and an excuse for the necessities of war. It is a portrait of a tribe that Lawrence came to respect and even love. It is a travel book about life in the desert at the time of writing. It is inevitably a mix of fact and history and fiction and probably at least a little bit of wishful thinking.

It is, ultimately, a pretty amazing book to read.

A few notes:

Before you read the book, do some quick background reading on the history that's involved. This will help avoid confusion.

Be prepared for a long read! It's not only a long book, it's an extremely dense book. The choppiness and frequent changes in tone make it hard to put on the reading cruise control.

Read it as a product of its time. Lawrence was a fascinating man, but not without his prejudices or faults.

Extraordinary Book by Extraordinary Man

SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM would be that rarity, an extraordinary tale of action, adventure, politics, and introspection, told by a writer who was also a first-rate intellectual and man of letters (the two -are- different), if it weren't also part of a tradition in English letters: the man or woman such as Charles Doughty or Gertrude Bell or Hester Stanhope or Freya Stark, or the men who went off and played the Great Game in India and Afghanistan who willingly entered cultures alien to them and returned changed, with books for us.
Of all of these, Lawrence has fascinated me most. I first read SEVEN PILLARS when I was twelve, and I've read it every couple of years since then. As I grow wiser, it grows richer.
Lawrence was an unlikely defender of empire, an unlikelier man of action who forced himself into a kind of ascetic mental and physical preparation for the great deeds he felt himself called upon to play. Living as he did from 1888 to 1935, he was practically born in the last age where someone could express that claim without being ridiculed; and he found his war in the Arab Revolt, that long-lasting sideline to the War to End All Wars that produced more war -- and some great writers, among whom Lawrence was one.
This is a story of war. It's also a story of heroism and of anguish, written by a man who not only shaped events, but was shaped -- and warped -- by them. It can be read as military strategy, political history, travel story, or pathology.
But it's better to read it as itself: a unique and complex book written by a man who was loved and admired by the most famous people of his time, but who, in the end, wanted only obscurity and the anesthetizing speed of one of the motorcycles that killed him.

Fine book, lousy edition

(This review pertains only to the BN Publishing company's hardcover edition of T.E. Lawrence's "Seven Pillars of Wisdom.")

I bought this edition of "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" because it was the only hardcover version available at the time. I'm a big advocate of hardcover books, but avoid this one. I get the sense that the publishers simply took an old copy of the book, scanned it, converted the scan into a basic word processing document, and published it. If that is what happened, they never bothered to read through their generated document to check for basic typographical errors.

For example, on page 488 the text reads: "They circled off We, watching their line of/light, noticed a great cloud of apparent dust added to the slow smoke rising from the ruined yard at Mafrak station." In that sentence, it appears that a period has been omitted, a slash has been inserted, and a capital S has been rendered in lower case. That one is easy enough that I can work out what the text is supposed to say. But there are errors of this sort on almost every single page, and Lawrence employs a difficult writing style as it is. These excessive typographical errors significantly detract from the readability of the book.

A second serious problem-- there is not a single map in this book, though Lawrence did include a map in earlier editions. There are points of the story where it is necessary to know where things are situated in order to appreciate what is going on. It got to the point where I found and downloaded some maps from the internet, and taped them inside the covers of my book. I refrenced these maps constantly. The publishers did include some photographs in the back matter, but they were either too cheap or too lazy to include a map.

T.E. Lawrence has written a book that is worth reading (coming from me, that's pretty high praise), but avoid thie error-ridden fly-by-night edition.

"Vasu" is based on real events. In the 19th century, Fiji was a lawless land controlled by warring cannibals. Two powerful cannibal chiefs and their armies of bloodthirsty savages fought for control of the islands with Great Britain and America taking sides and supporting the opposing armies in the background. The civil war in America had ruined the cotton industry and U.S. government sought to fill the void through ex-patriot cotton growers in the south seas. Great Britain was desperate to add Fiji to Her Majesty's Empire by force with their mighty navy and unscrupulous deeds to ensure they had access to the abundance of the island's natural resources and to maintain full control of the lucrative south seas trading routes.

Fiji was considered a dangerous and uninhabitable place by traders and western settlers. Only those individuals with courage, confidence and fully prepared for danger would dare attempt to go there. American sea captain, adventurer and soldier of fortune Captain George Rodney Burt entered Fiji during this time and atmosphere. He was accepted into one of the cannibal tribes and was given the title of 'Vasu' by the cannibal chief which made a member of the tribe's royal family and allowed him to choose a native wife.

Captain Burt lived in Fiji for 38 years and eventually came to own the largest cotton plantation in the eastern hemisphere. This story is based on true events from his original handwritten journals dating back to 1850 that describe in detail - tribal war, cannibalism, murder and forbidden love in Samoa and Fiji.

An incredible account of guts, brutality, and love

This is a remarkable read. At first I thought it might be a simple translation of the Captain Burt's journal, with stinted writing that would make my eyes cross, but I loved stories about the high seas and exotic locations, so I bought it. I have to say that this book blew away all my expectations! Written in a novel format, the story was immediate and engaging, though all based on true events. The setting and visuals were vivid and striking, and the dialogue and babble of characters were authentic, visceral, and memorable. Characters like Sandy, a gentle slave Burt helps free from jail, or Underwood, Burt's cruel plantation overseer that does unspeakable tortures to the slaves he's charged with.

The writing was fantastic, and the historical accuracy better than any other story about the 19th century that I've read, since it's based on direct accounts. As a historical junkie, this book was like taking a step back into time and actually being there. The events on Fiji are heart-wrenching and startling to say the least, but I won't spoil anything in this review, all I can say is that this book is worth the price, and will undoubtedly be a favorite for many. It is to me. This needs a movie, now. Five stars!

Reminding me to a certain extent of a book I used to love in childhood, about Gulliver's adventures in the land of dwarfs, this book takes the hole experience to a totally different level. Inspired by true facts, captured in Captain Burt's journals, the work of fiction that came out of those adventures, times, cultural details and political conflicts is actually very interesting and a real journey into those days. The author did a wonderful job in my view in taking the story from in the "raw" shape that it was in a manuscript journal and transform it into an engaging adventure novel.

A really amazing book to read that allows the reader to experience the world of 19th century cannibals in the islands of Samoa and Fiji. I was hooked right from the very start and the tale goes through many interesting twists and turns that make it overall a joy to read. The historical facts and setting is really intriguing to read and I couldn’t be happier. Highly recommended.

A Good Read, But 'White' is More Concentrated and Concise

This lengthy book isn't needed if you read Hara's book, 'White', which neatly summarizes his philosophy and approach to design. I've given this four stars instead of five simply for length. Hara is at his best when he's working in a concise form (IMO). If you are thinking about this book, check out 'White' first. If you really liked White (like I did) then this is the next step, although much of the material will be repeated and illustrated with case studies that may (or may not) add value for you.
