Gearheads, grease-monkeys and grannies unite!
By Jacqueline Brasfield
So I'm covered in mud and (ouch) gravel--funny how those sharp stones can really stick to your skin. Anyway, I'm trying to resurect a half-dead 1965 Ford Pick up by myself, with very few tools. I'm what I'd consider mildly mechanically competent, but with the time honored tradition of Chilton Manuals I've managed to work on my own cars with very good results. For older vehicles you'll also want to get the original manual (usually not too hard to find.)Chances are if you're looking at this book you're already comfortable working on your own vehicle, but on the off chance that you're a novice, consider this. Getting comfortable with working on your own vehicle and getting to know your vehicle is the best thing you can do. It saves you money in the long run and you'll feel empowered when you gap your own spark plugs for the first time. Seriously, with this book anyone should feel comfortable taking a look under the hood of their vehicle and doing a little work.

This book stays perched next to me as I work on the truck at all times!
By D. Hoffman
I love this book, the in depth walk through is what I need for my first time restoration project. It also has valuable information for the veteran mechanic. I love the fact that it is used and the popular areas of the book i.e. brakes are darkened from the numerous times that section has been accessed with greasy fingers. I bought my truck with no brakes at all, and this guide helped me get the old girl back on the road!!!

Chilton Manual Ford Pick-ups 1965-86
By Jeffrey Bailey
I am pleased with this manual. I am a beginer with mechanics, so the only problem i have is knowing what the part is that they are talking about to remove or install. I am learning and will continue to reference the chilton manual. I will also definately buy another chilton manual for the next vehicle I try to repair. Amazon.com did a good job at getting the book to me in a timely and inexpensive manner.

The Kingdom of God: Preached by Jesus...Forgotten by Us, by Wayne Barrett

The kingdom of God was the prevalent theme of Jesus’ teaching and that of the apostles. And yet, it is not the prevalent theme of American Christianity. For many Christians, it is not even a strong concept. Why is that? And what are the implications of this conceptual deficiency? Wayne Barrett’s book is a call for renewal of kingdom thinking and kingdom living among Christ’s people—particularly those in America. He advocates for Christian living that is informed by a worldview of two kingdoms: the kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world. Topics include: What is the kingdom of God? Who is in it and who is excluded? How should the kingdom of God advance, and what does that advancement look like? How does a Christian discover his or her role in God’s kingdom? Barrett also discusses how a Christian’s own “script,” relating to how one should live or even relating to one’s church involvement, can prevent him or her from functioning as a kingdom citizen. The book is both a challenge and an appeal to American Christians to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

The kingdom of God
By Nicholas
This will not be a best seller as its message does not sit well with modern western Christianity. As a Christian you owe it to yourself to read this book because, if Wayne is correct, there will be some very unpleasant surprises come judgement day. Bottom line is that we are either in the kingdom of god or the kingdom of this world and don't fool yourself by saying you are part of god's kingdom if you live a lifestyle and display the fruits of the worldly kingdom. The importance of seeking first the kingdom is put forward forcefully but not in a radical or legalistic way.

Succinct and Helpful Description of the Kingdom of God
By Alan Rathbun
One of the greatest weaknesses of the church today is our neglect of "The Gospel of the Kingdom". Evangelical churches teach part of the gospel and what they teach is true - but it's not the whole truth. Churches teach the gospel of salvation, but they do not reference that this salvation only comes from accepting Jesus' gracious invitation into the Kingdom of God. Churches also do not spend enough time show believers how to live their lives in the context of the Kingdom of God.

I am not pointing a finger at the church, because I spent a significant portion of my pastoral career doing this. Wayne Barrett is not part of my journey of becoming a preacher of the gospel of the Kingdom. He does a great job of introducing us to the Kingdom of God and what life in this Kingdom is like. He does a great job of focusing on the Church (with a capital "c") and his section on the spiritual gifts is valuable.

My only negative about the book is a small one. I found myself wishing at a few points that Barrett went into more detail. This, however, should not keep you from reading this book. If you are trying to gain an introductory understanding of the Kingdom of God, than this book will be very helpful. If you already a student of the Kingdom of God, you will find some helpful insights.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Edited by legendary horror writer Straub, whose works tend to vary from the stereotypical horror stories of recent decades, this collection of 12 unusual and terrifying tales strays from the formulaic bloodbaths that stock the shelves of bookstores everywhere. The collection features stories by such established writers as Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Carroll, Straub and Stephen King, whose early story The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet is read by John Lee with such earnestness and delight that it makes fans remember why they fell in love with King's prose to begin with. It also offers plenty of fresh voices in the genre. The cast of narrators is equally expansive, with a new voice tackling each new tale and always managing to get it right. A true standout is Mark Bramhall's reading of Dan Chaon's story The Bees. A Doubleday hardcover (Reviews, Sept. 8). (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
With an introduction by the much honored Straub (Ghost Story), this collection can be dubbed New Wave horror, considering that most of its 24 stories were published fairly recently and it includes contributions by celebrity horror writers. The tales mostly eschew buckets of blood, instead employing mood and suggestion in the manner of Edgar Allan Poe. "Little Red's Tango," Straub's lengthy quasigospel of a record-collecting obsessive, complete with beatitudes and a seductive demon, ably represents the editor's definition of New Wave horror. All the stories honor Poe, like the moody, contagious delusions of Stephen King's "The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet." The genre can be literary, as exemplified by Tia V. Travis's vengeful "The Kiss," Thomas Tessier's surprising "In Praise of Folly," and, probably the most demonstrably Poe-like, Ramsey Campbell's "The Voice of the Beach," featuring a neurasthenic narrator, suffocating suggestibility, and nearly palpable imagery. Brian Evenson's creepy "Body" and Dan Chaon's touching "The Bees" culminate in the horror of bad deeds catching up. The other stories included are without exception excellent. Recommended for all libraries.—Jonathan Pearce, California State Univ.
Stanislaus, Stockton

From Booklist
In this sumptuous, 25-story anthology, horror veteran Straub eschews the genre’s common macabre trimmings in favor of literary style. The authors featured represent Poe’s legacy with a level of craftsmanship equal to that of the best writers in contemporary literature. Most of them—the likes of Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Ramsey Campbell, and Straub himself—are already familiar to horror fans, while a few, such as Dan Chaon and Brian Evenson, may be more recognizable to mainstream readers. The selections include King’s early “The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet,” about an editor whose typewriter is infested with crumb-eating elves called Fornits; Melanie and Steve Rasnic Tem’s award-winning “The Man on the Ceiling,” a faux-autobiographical account of the uncommon terrors haunting a family; and Ben Percy’s eerie “Unearthed,” describing the madness afflicting an amateur archaeologist when he digs up an Indian corpse. Full of unusual themes and finely nuanced prose, this is a collection to spend time with and savor slowly. --Carl Hays

A great horror collection
By Robert Busko
Poe's Children: The New Horror, an Anthology edited by Peter Straub is a terrific collection of short stories by a varied collection of authors. Straub includes one of his own stories, Little Red's Tango, a story that is sure to grab the reader's attention. I have to admit that I had a little difficulty getting into the rhythm of the story, but once I did I found Little Red's Tango to be truly worthwhile. Also included is a great story by Stephen King, The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet, another story dealing with an author who is convinced that his typewriter is possessed. I think this is King at is "short story" best.

I was also pleased to see that Neil Gaiman was included with his October in the Chair. Here's a list of all the stories included in Poe's Children:

The Bees Dan Chaon
Cleopatra Brimstone Elizabeth Hand
The Man on the Ceiling Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem
The Great God Pan M. John Harrison
The Voice of the Beach Ramsey Campbell
Body Brian Evenson
Louise's Ghost Kelly Link
The Sadness of Detail Jonathan Caroll
Leda M. Rickert
In Praise of Folly Thomas Tessier
Plot Twist David J. Schow
The Two Sams Glen Hirshberg
Notes on the Writing of Horror: A Story Thomas Ligotti
Unearthed Benjamin Percy
Gardner of Heart Bradford Morrow
Little Red's Tango Peter Straub
The Ballad of the Flixible Bullet Stephen King
20th Century Ghost Joe Hill
The Green Glass Sea Ellen Klages
The Kiss Tia V. Travis
Black Dust Graham Joyce
October in the Chair Neil Gaiman
Missolonghi 1824 John Crowley
Insect Dreams Rosilind Palermo Stevenson

Also included at the end is a brief biography of each of the authors.

I suspect that like many readers, I have just a wee bit of difficulty reading when the story/author changes. Authors write with their own cadence. It always takes me a page or two to get in step, but other than that, I look forward to new anthologies, especially in the horror genre.

The best story in the collection, in my opinion only has to be October in the Chair by Gaiman, followed closely by Cleopatra's Brimstone. Picking these over the others is really pretty arbitrary since all of the stories are grabbers.

All things considered, Poe's Children is a unique collection by a diverse group of authors.
I highly recommend.

What is horror, anyway
By Zachary
In which Peter Straub sets out to broaden the umbrella of “horror” beyond the stereotypical blood-and-guts sensationalism typically associated with it. He succeeds at this so well that I had a hard time figuring out exactly what made some of these stories fit into the genre at all.

Dan Chaon - “The Bees” - A husband and father is haunted (literally or metaphorically?) by the first wife and child he abandoned during his drinking days. Impressively dark and downtrodden, although one wishes the two wives were sketched out a bit more actively. 3.5/5

Elizabeth Hand - “Cleopatra Brimstone” - The second time I’ve realized after starting a story that I had read it before in Redshift and promptly forgotten about it. This story follows a beautiful young entomologist who travels to England after surviving a sexual assault, at which point she proceeds to pick men up at bars and clubs and turn them into butterflies by having sex with them. I guess there’s something to be said here about a woman reasserting her sexual agency, but weird stories about transgressive sexuality are just not my thing. Also Hand devotes huge chunks of time to talking about raves and clubs. 1/5

Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem - “The Man on the Ceiling” - I enjoyed the conceit of this one - Melanie and Steve, a married couple, take turns metafictionally (?) relaying the effect that Melanie’s lifelong terror/hallucination of a ghostly presence has on their life together, but the story kind of fizzles out without doing much of anything with that conceit. 3/5

M. John Harrison - “The Great God Pan” - Decades ago, three college friends took part in some sort of magic ritual which has proceeded to ruin the rest of their lives, despite the fact that none of them can remember what actually happened that night. Like “The Bees,” this is a very dark story, and the reader is also swept into this sort of claustrophobic hopelessness where the characters find themselves as they suffer the consequences of this action that remains entirely obscured throughout. Harrison later expanded this story into the novel The Course of the Heart, which I wouldn’t mind reading. 4.5/5

Ramsey Campbell - “The Voice of the Beach” - My favorite story in here, and also the one most comfortably situated within the weird/horror tradition - highly reminiscent of “The Willows” and itself echoed later in China Mieville’s “Details.” A reclusive man living on the beach has a friend, recently recovered from a nervous breakdown, come and stay with him. They notice odd patterns and details about the beach, find an abandoned village (complete with a seemingly-incoherent fragmentary diary), the friend (and the narrator!) act increasingly oddly, and things unravel quite nicely. 5/5

Brian Evenson - “Body” - Having enjoyed what I’ve read of Evenson’s in the past, this was a big disappointment. A fragmentary and disjointed account of a man imprisoned and tortured by some monks, and then something about women and tearing shoes apart and... ? 1/5

Kelly Link - “Louise’s Ghost” - A story about two lifelong friends, who are both named Louise, no last names given, so the reader is left to differentiate whom is being discussed by their quirky actions. I would expect to hate this, and it did wear awfully thin, but by the end I couldn’t help enjoying this story a good deal nonetheless. One Louise has a daughter, while the other has a ghost. Things get sad. 3/5

Jonathan Carroll - “The Sadness of Detail” - An interesting setup - an angel recruits an artist to recreate images for an increasingly senile God - that ends right after revealing said setup. 2/5

M. Rickert - “Leda” - A modern retelling of the Greek myth of Leda and the swan, no more, no less. 2/5

Thomas Tessier - “In Praise of Folly” - An appreciator of architectural follies travels to a remote town in New York in order to photograph a garden done up generations ago as a mini-Italy by an eccentric industrialist. Up until the climax, nothing seems amiss (aside from a single reference when he arrives in the town), and this means the horrific element (which is well-done, such as it is), is entirely divorced from the narrative leading up to it (also well-done, such as it was). This was probably the author’s intent, but there could have at least been more of a thematic connection. 3/5

Caligatha (Realm) (Volume 1), by Matt Spire

A brilliant scientist and widower attempts to recreate his deceased wife and child, only to disappear into a fog of drug-addled depression at a remote coastal resort.
Survivors of a global disaster struggle to piece together answers and survive in a near-future wasteland of high technology and chaos.
These seemingly disconnected worlds are woven together with conflicting timelines, hazy memories, and one man's desire to hold onto what he loves at any cost.
A thrilling exploration of the dark fringes of a derailed-singularity world: nanotechnology, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence alter the rules of human existence. But human drives and motives remain unchanged at their best--and at their most terrifying.

What beta readers are saying:
"Caligatha is a unique blend of post-apocalyptic mystery and a darkly human tale of love and loss. Traces of William Gibson-esque nightmarish technology infringe on a romantic world."
"Caligatha blends science fiction, literary fiction, horror, mystery and thriller elements into a uniquely compelling tale featuring a strong female protagonist. Dense and multi-layered, but also an easy read, it will appeal to fans of all genres."
"One of the most pleasurably-disorienting books I've read. So many layers and reveals, and I'm still left wanting more."
"Neil Gaiman meets Margaret Atwood meets terrifying things...it's fun exploring their world."
"You reach the middle, and it punches you in the stomach. Then every page after that keeps punching you in the stomach. I couldn't stop reading until the end. I really hope there's a second book planned."

Poetic Sci-Fi....absolutely beautiful!!
By Dalai Momma
Ok so I finally got around to reading this book....Caligatha by Matt Spire. It was a great read and I must say I was actually blown away with how good it was. Taking me on unexpected turns and not just at the end of the book like most do. The sentences...lines upon lines in the book...such poetic beauty...this author certainly knows his words and uses them well. A haunting read, one that will follow you well after you finish it.

I don't even know where to begin...the story is so complex it is difficult to describe (but not difficult to read). It's exactly what a sci-fi book should be. I don't like to give spoilers on my reviews so I am gonna tread lightly on describing the story-line. We have Eric, Crane, and Mae...traveling nomads in this post apocalyptic civilization. A treasure trove of articles, a journal, letters, are found by them or rather they were out seeking these things, and from that we get the motherboard of stories!! Jericho...how it all began...why he is so important...his friendship with Reuben...Fern...Lydia....The Blue Coral. The scientist, Jericho...a highly intelligent man that created a cure all pill, Realm, MAIA, Caligatha, a means of survival..first out of necessity but soon spiraled into something selfishly justified by his own needs with no concern for the others. A time of nanotechnology, gene therapy, robotics, Jericho is a pioneer at the midst of it all...but to quote from the book, "When you make waves you produce peaks and troughs". From good, bad too seeped its way in and ran rampant. No one had time or the ability to fix it. On top of all that, Jericho came with his demons...demons in the form of drugs, an addiction he could not shake whether in reality or in his created world. Somewhat of a sick distorted love story for the woman he is fueled for...and their child...what happened to them at his hands...the longing to go back and make things right, failing miserably. Then we get hit with Keene and Emma and the reality that they are facing and how Lydia, Jericho and all the others tie in to that. Story within stories it's easy to be so deeply enveloped in this book. Just when you think you have it all figured out....you're getting another intricate layer to this world of sci-fi brilliance. But this is not just Sci-fi...it's Poetic Sci-fi. Wording alone makes this book so amazing...bonus that it's a great creative story.

Thanks for my win of this book in exchange for an honest review and thanks to Matt Spire for creating such a wonderful story. You have done the Sci-fi genre loving world good with this one.

Heady, intricately plotted with mind-blowing scope and ideas. Loved it.
By Jeffrey O. Curtis
This is a great book. Some science fiction books are great because of their originality, their creations of places and beings and events of wonder. Others are great because they expose us to grand ideas and make us think about universal truths or universal questions, even universal deceptions. Others are great because they are so-well written and intricately plotted that they are simply a delight and amazement to read and we are left trying to wrap our minds around the question: how could anyone even write this?

This book touches on all of the above. The plot is exceptionally deep and I need to read it again with pen and paper and take notes as I go. I got lost, but that is a compliment and not a criticism. There are still some questions I would ask the author if I had a chance. I don't yet have it unraveled but that makes it a fun puzzle to tease the mind. I like books that make me work and think. If you don't, you may not agree with my assessment of this book. It's an intellectual workout. The prose is great although the print version I had has not been meticulously edited and there are some grammatical mistakes and spelling mistakes that I did not allow to distract me. I was sufficiently distracted as it was.

The ideas really sell this book for me. The first fun idea, a favorite of mine, is human awkwardness and relationships. This author crafted the perplexity and confusion of trying to relate to someone you are attracted to as well as I've read it anywhere. Another central theme is personal identity. Who am I really? Who is the real me? What gives me purpose and meaning? What makes me human? What do my thoughts, feelings, experiences, and how I react to them tell me about myself? How can I know what parts of me are genuine and others mere role-playing for the benefit of others or for some false ideal. Purpose and identity are complicated topics to deal with and this author does so with a dexterous subtlety.

I was reminded of two things I read in the past while reading this book. One was an idea, I think it was by Peter van Inwagen, who asked, "How do we know we really are who we think we are and are not just some brain soaking in a vat with electrodes connected to it being stimulated by a complex computer program to give us what we think are real experiences?" The other idea came from Kant's Critique of Pure Reason which I think can be partly summed up in the assumption, "We can't know that the world is real, but at least we can know our perceptions are real" To which I always react, how can we know our perceptions are real?

If you want a challenging read with a mind-blowing plot and some deep imponderables, take the plunge.

A solid work of Sci-Fi and Sci-Phi
By Benjamin Gohs

As a Science Fiction/fantasy/future dystopia book and movie junkie, I've read and watched my fair share of everything from the greats to the not-so-greats (Star Wars Aftermath, anyone?)
I believe I can confidently categorize Matt Spire's “Caligatha” as Science Philosopy.
This brooding work got my attention right away with the creepy and cryptic discovery of a journal in a dark new world seemingly devoid of hope.
Spire is a competent dialogue man, which is a welcome departure from some of the cardboard and unrealistic prose I've come across as of late.
And, he knows how to paint a picture with lines like, “Jericho doesn't dream the way he used to, where every fear of inadequacy is stark nakedness or decaying teeth.”
This line is so good it should've been on the book jacket: “Everyone wants to live in tomorrow and vacation in yesterday.”
Spire's Caligatha sets out on a fairly ambitious course, daring to dance between time-lines.
The work can, at times, be disorienting … but, in a purposeful way.
And, when the secrets are revealed, they are doozies.
Spire did a good job of keeping me guessing throughout. (Nothing I hate more than figuring out the secret 100 pages before the author intended you to.)
Oftentimes, writers are admonished to avoid head-hopping from POV to POV but the story progressed nicely from the viewpoints of characters like Jericho, Eric and Lydia.
Hints of the overall story reminded me somewhat of the movie “Gattaca,” which focused on a normal human's plight to exist in a future society of genetically perfect humans.
Though, Caligatha seems to answer the question of what happens when you try for perfection and then cannot deal with failing to do so.
The book does a nice job of imparting an ethereal sense of impending doom—when it isn't subjecting you to the real thing.
The powerful horror aspects were executed quite nicely. (No pun intended.)
The characters are solid, interesting and—best of all—human.
I'm a big fan of internal conflict and internal monologues. And, Caligatha delivers with some astute and realistic views into the minds of its characters.
Caligatha isn't perfect but no book, not even the most highly-read works, are.
I'm a firm believer that parts of a book I do not enjoy may simply not have been for me or did not connect with me because of my life experiences. So, I'll keep my criticisms to myself.
All in all, Matt Spire's “Caligatha” is a solid piece of speculative fiction—a thinking man's Sci-Fi in a world of clichéd pulp.

From Publishers Weekly
In a voice often as powerful as the riveting gun he wielded in the 1970s and '80s in a Flint, Mich., General Motors assembly plant, Hamper nails down the excruciating boredom of a shoprat's life on the line. These roughly chronological essays, many published in the local press, bare the rage and humor that, with booze and drugs, friendships and enmities, served to speed along the timeclock's "suffocating minute hand." A fourth-generation factory worker, raised on hard music, hard liquor and soft drugs, given a parochial school education, Hamper was the eldest of eight children deserted by their father, supported by their mother. He was determined not to be an auto worker but soon after high school, married and a father, he needed the steady work GM offered. With free-ranging intelligence and a sharply anarchic sensibility, he tries to figure out and establish some control over his place in GM's massive corporate system. While these essays might best satisfy in small doses, Hamper, no longer a GM employee, writes with unrelenting energy. BOMC and QPB selections; film rights to Warner Bros.

From Library Journal
Hamper, a son, a grandson, and a great-grandson of General Motors' "shoprats," chronicles ten years spent in an abusive marriage with GM in Flint, Michigan. Despite exploitative management policies, arrogant and/or incompetent supervisors, and mind-numbing working conditions, Hamper, like the abused spouse who keeps returning to the abuser, becomes de pressed during layoffs and revives when recalled to the assembly line. Hamper copes with his perceived limited options by consuming impressive quantities of alcohol and writing an irreverent, cynically humorous column about shoprat life for an alternative newspaper. How much of Hamper's alienation and later panic disorder are the result of his ten years at GM and how much are due to genetics and choices is unexplored. Another weakness is Hamper's graceless style and his overuse of four-letter words. Despite these shortcomings, blue-collar voices are rarely heard, and therefore this is recommended for public libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
Based on his ``Rivethead'' column that has appeared in Midwest newspapers as well as in Mother Jones, here is Hamper's tortured description of his wretched career as a General Motors worker in the factories of Flint, Michigan. A fourth generation ``shoprat'' (one uncle spent 45 years at the Buick Engine Plant), Hamper explains how an irresponsible father, numerous siblings, and his own penchant for laziness, drugs, and taverns pointed directly to a future in the plants, despite his inclinations toward poetry and music. In 1977, he reluctantly began work in the cab shop (a place with a noise level ``like some hideous unrelenting tape loop of trains having sex''). Ranging from this experience to his retirement ten years later, Hamper writes of the drudgery of factory labor; repeated layoffs and call-backs; extensive on-the-job alcohol and drug consumption by himself and fellow workers; ongoing battles with foremen and supervisors; and his quest, similar to that of his mentor, Michael Moore, director of Roger and Me, to go bowling with GM chairman Roger Smith. His ``Rivethead'' series hardly endeared him to management, nor did his often obnoxious behavior. In 1986, at about the time his column first appeared in Mother Jones, he began to experience ``severe panic disorder,'' or anxiety attacks, and has spent the past few years in and out of a mental-health clinic. Although perceptively critical of American business management, practice, and values, Hamper nearsightedly finds little of worth or integrity in his fellow workers, and is downright offensive toward women, who, in his world, ``lust for summer sausage.'' Rivethead indeed. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Funny and brutally honest. A snapshot of the UAW in the 80's
By Amazon Customer
My dad started at GM in 1971 and retired on disability in 1996. I myself worked in the factory that made Chevy Baretta windows in the 80's. I say that because I don't want anyone to take this review as putting down UAW members or autoworkers.

To say the least, Mr Hamper has a voice and a sense of humor that capture those noisy, smelly, overheated factories that spit out the low quality flashy junk Detroit produced in the late 70's and early 80's. He chronicles the alcohol and rock music that fueled the shenanigans that went on the parking lots and nearby bars just as well.

Sadly, this book is also a tale of mental illness and the American auto industry's failed first attempts to achieve the quality of the Japanese cars that were suddenly outselling the best efforts of the "Big Three".

If you ever shot a rivet on an assembly line, or loved someone who did then you'll probably like this book. It's also a good read for anyone who remembers sex, drugs, and rock & roll of the 70's and 80's with any fondness.

"We've gotta get out of this place, if it's the last thing we ever do...."
By Moldyoldie
Something to which author Ben Hamper doesn't necessarily subscribe is the so-called "Puritan work ethic". This well-written, funny, and covertly disturbing journal of life on the assembly line makes it abundantly clear that Mr. Hamper's ambitions lay no further than that day's "quittin' time" and the subsequent stop at the neighborhood bar. It's a life which, according to him at least, was almost pre-destined upon birth and which would lead to an early grave if he'd allow it to continue as such.

Booze, drugs, and rock & roll figure prominently in this life. In fact, one often gets the impression this "life" represents the rule and not the exception. His keen, detailed reportage of daily events leads one to believe that he's just "one of the guys", a cog in the industrial complex wherein if a man or woman can last thirty years then there'll be joy at the end of some north-of-Flint rainbow. But therein lies the rub.

Combinations of daily repetitious routine, lack of a clear sense of purpose, and guiltless self-destructive habits can make thirty years seem like an eternity. After reading this book, I came away thinking this was not only endemic to the life of an autoworker, but also downright insane.

What I found disappointing in Hamper's account was an apparent lack of discernment as to the role of his union in making the pay and working conditions as "tolerable" as they were. The book's few instances where the union local played a part were as if its presence was taken for granted as much as the plant's lifelong presence in his town; i.e. an impervious constituent of life's landscape. Ultimately, it was not to be.

However, as prideful a "rivethead" as he was, I think Hamper's ultimate point was that this was not going to be the lifetime calling he had envisioned. The accounts of his serendipitous success as a column writer and the notoriety it engendered made for some great reading; a true story of redemption which has not seen its final chapter.

I heartily recommend this book to everyone...not just current and prospective "shoprats".

"Rivethead" describes life on the GM assembly line.
By Russell Fanelli
Ben Hamper's outrageous description of life on the
car and truck assembly line had me laughing out loud at the antics of both workers and bosses at the GM factory in Flint, Michigan. Hamper uses words like rivets and blasts them at the nearest human target; no one escapes his savage attack, not even himself. Hamper is a "flake" and he knows it, but he is an observant flake who is just as adept at turning a phrase as he is finding ways to avoid work. He seeks to please no one, not even himself, and he succeeds beyond even his expectations. Read at your own risk is how Hamper himself might caution us about "Rivethead."

About the Author
Some people love to travel to foreign countries, Texas John loves to live in foreign countries.

Too many travelers count how many countries they go to and wear the number like a badge of honor. Tex doesn't place a lot of value in that. How much did you really learn in your 4 days in Paraguay about the people and the culture?

Tex prefers to stay and work for months or years wherever he goes. He has spent 5 years in China, a year in Japan, a year in South America, and half a year in the Philippines. He believes if you haven't worked in the country then it is impossible to understand it.

Texas John is currently in an undisclosed location in Asia.

Learned more about the Chinese from this book than from anything else I've read.
By Whistlers Mom
I down loaded this because it was free and I'm cheap and I always check out books about Americans teaching English abroad because some of them are quite interesting. Then I got to looking at the stupid cover picture and the dumb title and the moronic nom-de-keyboard and I thought life's too short to waste on another pile of drivel by some idiot who went someplace, got a job teaching English, stayed drunk the whole time, and embarrassed himself and his country. I really wish I could remember why I started reading it.

It doesn't matter because once I started I was hooked like a large-mouth bass. This guy is funny and he can write. Furthermore, he stayed in China an amazing FIVE YEARS. A year is a LONG time for most Americans to stay in China and many fold after a few months, which is why there are always lots of teaching jobs. And I owe him an apology because he DIDN'T stay drunk the whole time, but seems to have genuinely made a effort to do the job he was being paid for. Actually, the man is mature, intelligent, and thoughtful, but don't tell him I said so. Clearly he prefers to pass himself off as an irresponsible goofball and that's fine.

While he breaks the chapters down by year, this is basically a collection of stories. Most are funny because he's the kind of guy who finds the humor in situations even while he's cussing and pulling out his hair (or someone else's hair.) So as entertainment, the book is well worth your time. What sets it apart is that each story is followed by a "Cultural Take" comment where he explains what this incident taught him about the Chinese and the way they think.

Most Americans in Asia simply accept that the locals behave oddly (to us) and order another round of drinks. Why did this author CARE why his Chinese colleagues, friends, and enemies act the way they do? It's because he's a saleman. He worked part time in sales while in school and then went into professional sales and then became a headhunter, which is also sales because you're selling the company to the candidate and then selling the candidate to the company. And he loved sales and realized that it fits his personality. He took a job teaching English only because that was the easiest way to stay in China for an extended period.

So he was technically an educator, but that saleman's personality never went into hibernation and a salesman (a real one, not just an order taker) HAS to know what the other guy is thinking. Unless you get inside the other person's head, you can't sell him anything. So every time he interacted with the Chinese, his mind was asking, "Why are they acting like this? What are they thinking?" And with observation and some help from Chinese friends and co-workers, he started to understand Chinese culture and how it molds individual and group behaviors. That's not to say he fell in love with the Chinese way of thinking and acting. He didn't always love it, but he did start to understand it. And now he passes five years' worth of understanding along to the reader in a hilarious, fascinating book that entertains as it educates.

If you're going to China or have contact with Chinese in any way, this book is invaluable. I've even read books by Chinese authors claiming to explain Chinese culture to Westerners and I ALWAYS finish more confused than I started. I finally realized that the Chinese don't WANT us to understand them. You have to learn about them from an insider who knows the ropes and who's better with ropes than a Texan? I would LOVE to see this book marketed to professionals doing business in China. It would help them far more than the crap they're reading now. I hope Tex is at work on a book about his experiences in Latin America. I'll even be willing to pay!
