THE NATIONAL BESTSELLER
It was the most extraordinary public saga of our time, and Jeffrey Toobin gives us a definitive history of the ordeal that very nearly brought down a president. Here is the whole story of the Clinton sex scandals -- from its beginnings in a Little Rock hotel to its climax on the floor of the United States Senate with only the second vote on presidential removal in American history. Rich with Shakespearean characters and dramatic secrets, fueled with the high octane of a sensational legal thriller, and tinged by misguided, outlandish behavior that was played out at the very highest levels, Toobin's A Vast Conspiracy brings a dignity and integrity to this story that it has never before received.
The Clinton sex scandals will shape forever how we think about the signature issues of our day -- sex, privacy, civil rights, and, yes, cigars. A Vast Conspiracy will shape forever how we think about the Clinton scandals.

Amazon.com Review
What--another book about the messes Bill Clinton got himself into? Well, yes, but with a difference: Jeffrey Toobin's A Vast Conspiracy is the first to provide readers with comprehensive behind-the-scenes details of the machinations of independent counsel Kenneth Starr's team of prosecutors, lawyers for Monica Lewinsky and Paula Jones, and congressional members as the president's "inappropriate relationship" snowballed into the country's first impeachment proceedings in over a century.

Toobin's narrative is one of the most levelheaded versions of the 1998 scandal yet published, although he has very few kind words for anybody involved. "No other major political controversy in American history produced as few heroes as this one," he notes, and "in spite of his consistently reprehensible behavior, Clinton was, by comparison, the good guy in this struggle." While debunking Hillary Rodham Clinton's claims that she and her husband were the victims of a "vast right-wing conspiracy" (a claim that ignores Clinton's responsibility for his actions), Toobin does demonstrate how lawyers for Paula Jones collaborated with Linda Tripp and Lucianne Goldberg to build the most damaging case possible against the president. (He also suggests, not without cause, that Newsweek reporter Michael Isikoff worked more closely with Tripp and Goldberg than he reported in his own book, Uncovering Clinton.)

While for the most part discreetly judgmental, A Vast Conspiracy sometimes borders on cruel in its descriptions of Monica Lewinsky: after describing a 45-minute discussion between Clinton and his sometime sex partner, Toobin comments, "An actual conversation with Lewinsky may have been the thing that cured the president of his infatuation," and then later, "There were few better measures of Tripp's dedication to her book research and Clinton-hating than the simple fact that she tolerated Lewinsky's inane chatter for so long." Yet his portrayal of Lewinsky as "a genuine, if occasional, sexual partner as well as an obsessed, unhinged fan" is, thanks to his rich storytelling abilities, compelling. (Whether it's true remains to be seen; some readers of his previous book, The Run of His Life, believe that Toobin's portrayal of O.J. Simpson seriously underestimated the suspected killer.) And, although it will no doubt get overlooked amidst all the salacious details of the case, Toobin makes a good argument for how the whole brouhaha was an inevitable result of several decades of "legal activism," in which lawsuits were used to achieve broad political changes. Between Richard Posner's musings on the legal aspects of the impeachment hearings in An Affair of State and Toobin's narrative reconstruction of the events leading up to the impeachment, we have the beginnings of a calm consideration of just what exactly happened to American politics during Clinton's second term. --Ron Hogan

From the Inside Flap
In A Vast Conspiracy, the best-selling author of The Run of His Life casts an insightful, unbiased eye over the most extraordinary public saga of our time -- the Clinton sex scandals.  A superlative journalist known for the skillfulness of his investigating and the power of his writing, Jeffrey Toobin tells the unlikely story of the events that began over doughnuts in a Little Rock hotel and ended on the floor of the United States Senate, with only the second vote on Presidential removal in American history.  This is an entirely fresh look at the scandal that very nearly brought down a president.

Packed with news-making disclosures and secret documents published here for the first time, Toobin unravels the three strands of a national scandal - those leading from  Paula Jones, Kenneth Starr, and Monica Lewinsky - that created a legal, personal, and political disaster for Bill Clinton.  A Vast Conspiracy is written with the narrative drive of a sensational (if improbable) legal thriller, and Toobin brilliantly explores the high principle and low comedy that were the hallmarks of the story.  From Tripp to Goldberg, Isikoff to Hyde, the complex and tangled motivations behind the scandal are laid bare.

While misguided, outlandish behavior was played out at the very highest level, Toobin analyzes the facts and the key figures with a level of dignity and insight that this story has not yet received. The Clinton scandals will shape forever how we think about the signature issues of our day -- sex and sexual harassment, privacy and perjury, civil rights, and, yes, cigars.  Toobin's book will shape forever how we think about the Clinton scandals.

Makes everyone look bad
By A Customer
In spite of all the accusations that Toobin is a DNC lackey and a Clinton apologist (even in the New York Times), I am hard pressed to see where he grants the president any leeway. As an attorney, he carefully distinguishes between legal and ethical questions; as a journalist, he is scrupulous about stating (and hedging) facts. His account is entirely credible, and it appears that he is critical about his sources.
It gets less than a perfect score because Mr. Toobin too often succumbs to the temptation of his own moralizing and gossip, even beyond valid criticism of questionable legal practices here and there. The facts about the individuals speak for themselves.
Undoubtedly, Clinton-haters will also hate this book, since it doesn't support their views. Toobin's main point - that there are political operatives in this country who do not respect the democratic process and instead seek redress in the legal system - is amply demonstrated in the Clinton/Lewinsky/Jones/Whitewater fiasco. This is the real news in this affair, not that presidents have uncontrollable egos (and libidos).
I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the whole chain of events and is unafraid of being disgusted even more by everybody.

Biased But Good

Before I read this book, I thought the president should have resigned. After I read this book I still thought the president should have resigned. However, the author doesn't share that view. In some ways he is an apologist for the Clintons and that is rather crudely evident. However, I had no idea how unsavory were the forces aligned against him. Toobin gives us a view into a very unsavory and I think immoral group of characters who in some ways were every bit as wrong and immoral as Clinton. Even though I found myself cringing at times with his defense of the president (and don't doubt it, he defends him) I was cringing at those points in the book which did show that a rag-tag bunch of shady characters was trying to overtrow an election through the judicial process. That is evident from some of the insider-perspectives Toobin gives his readers. It's scary to think that one day, a group like this will succeed against a president I really like.

I thought I had read it all...

... but Toobin has shown me how much I missed in the mainstream media, and even in the "off the beaten path" outlets like Salon. I had vowed never to read another impeachment book (burned out on the topic). I'm delighted I broke that vow. This book is filled with telling details and revealing connections among the many players (you just think you already know about them). As a fellow author I am in awe of Toobin's fine investigative skills, grasp of the big picture, and inviting writing style. I heartily recommend this title to anyone who wants to know what forces converged to create the impeachment mess. No one is let off the hook. The one thing I would have suggested, had I been Toobin's editor: delete the unnecessary put downs to specific individuals when relating factual information. It tells us more about Toobin's attitude toward the individuals than it does about the people themselves. A couple of examples: Toobin seems unable to resist making mean-spirited remarks about Paula Corbin Jones's hair bows and curls, and Monica Lewinsky's intellectual powers. I have no reason to question his accuracy; only his need to include such pointless observations.

I still thought breasts might be more trouble than they were worth. Growing up reminded me a little bit of Hide and Go Seek. When it was your time to grow up, Natrue said, "Here I come, ready or not." And Nature could always find you.

From Publishers Weekly
Sinclair's much-touted story of a teenage girl confronting racial prejudice while growing up on Chicago's South Side during the late 1960s.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
From newcomer Sinclair, the coming-of-age story of a black girl in 1960's Chicago. Jean ``Stevie'' Stevenson is a child of the working poor. Her father is a hospital janitor, her mother is a bank teller, and Grandma owns a popular South Side chicken-stand. Sixth-grader Stevie, meanwhile, is tired of her mother's rules, her refusal to countenance ``black English,'' her attempts to make Stevie a dreaded ``L7'' (square). Stevie's dream is to be popular and cool, and her wish is granted when ``all the way cool'' Carla invites her to a party. Soon Stevie has had her first period, her first kiss (from sexy Yusef), and is learning that cool is not necessarily kind, for that dog Yusef has his classmates spy while the two show themselves to each other. All this is fresh and authentic. The trouble starts with Stevie's arrival at high school, which coincides with the ``black is beautiful'' period (it's 1967). Here, the flow is disrupted by obvious setups intended to make points about race and sexual orientation. Stevie and Carla happen on their white art-teacher having a date with a black man--puppets miming the interracial experimentation of the period. At school, the sympathetic Nurse Horn puts Stevie in a quandary: Is it possible to be friends with a white woman, who may even be ``funny'' (lesbian)? The question overshadows Stevie's almost consummated relationship with Sean, a straight-arrow senior, and although the good nurse answers it in best Ann Landers style (``because you have a schoolgirl crush on me doesn't make you a homosexual''), Stevie ends up dwarfed by her author's agenda. Sinclair's story works fine when she gives her characters room to breathe. A fair-to-middling debut. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A Great Book For Teens
By A Customer
In the book Coffee Will Make You Black, by April Sinclair, the lead character Jean Stevenson, Stevie to her friends, tells in a narrative perspective of her adolescent years, growing up in Chicago in the 1960's. The book is like Stevie's diary. She tells you her experiences with boys, girls, love, sex, popularity, school and racism in a comical and to-the-point fashion. The book is a quick, easy, fun read that hooks you from the start. It deals with very realistic issues that are fun and interesting to read about. The book makes you feel like you are part of Stevie's chaotic life. She gives you the opportunity to share her deepest, darkest, secrets. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the book an 8. I enjoyed reading it greatly, and finished it in one day. I liked reading it because it dealt with issues that I deal with. It tells of Stevie's hard times with boys, other girls, sex, love, popularity, which are all important to me now as a freshman in high school. It didn't take very long to get into the book because the first page is a humorous anecdote about a boy asking if 12 year old Stevie is a virgin. Stevie, confused with the meaning of virgin, goes home and asks her mamma. The whole book is little anecdotes like the one above so I liked it from the start. The book isn't very short yet the words and vocabulary are very easy and simply written so stumbling over big words is not a problem. Nothing very big happens in the book, it stays rather monotone throughout. Something I found a little hard to understand was the slang. Since Stevie is growing up in the sixties in Chicago, there are bound to be differences in slang but overall the read is easy. It may be hard for younger people to read this book because they might not get what some of the terms mean. This book reminded me of many movies about teenage-hood. Like American Pie or Election. I have never read another book by April Sinclair but I enjoyed this book and will read other works by this author. In class we have reading groups where there are four groups of five kids and each group reads a different book. To decide which book to read the teacher read the first pages of every book. I enjoyed the first page so I signed up to read this book. Since the book is written from a females perspective, I think that girls would relate and enjoy reading it more because it deals with female issues. I can imagine a guy not understanding the complete intent of the author. The book is very funny so I think that the reader should have a good sense of humor, and maybe someone that grew up in the sixties could relate to an even greater extent. " What does 'coffee will make you black mean mama?' 'The old folks in the South used to tell that to children so they wouldn't want to drink coffee. The last thing anybody wanted to be was black."' This quote is from page 111 in the book. I chose this quote not only because it is obviously the line in which the title of the book comes from, but because it also represents the feelings about different races at the time. I don't get why people ever thought that darker skin made a difference. Personally I think all racism is ridiculous and that this quote is very interesting. To think that back then the children were told that in order to stay lighter they shouldn't drink coffee is ridiculous. It shows that back then they weren't proud of their skin color and would do anything, like not drink coffee, to stay lighter. I wonder if maybe this saying was also to keep kids from just drinking coffee. Maybe they didn't want the children to drink too much caffeine. In any case being darker was the worst thing imaginable. I hope that this quote shows a little bit of how the book is written. This is a more serious moment in the book but I thought it was important. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Coffee Will Make You Black
By Shannon Hovis
In the novel, Coffee Will Make You Black by April Sinclair, Jean Stevenson, or "Stevie" experiences the difficulties of growing up as an African-American teenager in the 1960's. Stevie is attempting to find her niche. Ever since her best friend moved away, she has been a very studious, smart girl. Now, the longing for acceptance and popularity is unbearable. At last, Stevie's attempts pay off and she befriends a popular girl named Carla. Stevie's mom dislikes Carla because she is lower class. Stevie's mom is an ambitious for Stevie, which leads to many disputes about her future and her friendship with Carla. Overtime, however, Stevie becomes very close with Carla and is unwilling to give her up. The only problem is that their friendship still isn't entirely mutual because Stevie does everything at Carla's commands. Carla's support is what keeps her sane, feeling she belongs. Later an issue comes up that tests their friendship. However, at this point Stevie has grown to know herself and have the confidence she has always needed to know that if Carla can'' stick by her no matter what the outcome, the she is not worth it.
On a scale of 1to10 I would rate this book a 9. I enjoyed reading it because I am interested in the struggle that African Americans have gone through. Although, as a white, it makes me feel guilty, this book demonstrates the profound hurt inflicted by racism. On one level this book is about the affects of racism, but on another it is about the issues of teenagers. From the first line the reader is drawn into the story. "Mama, are you a virgin?" The conversations are written in dialect, which can be difficult to read and understand, but this is necessary to give flavor to the people and setting.
Background knowledge of American race relations and the civil rights movement make the themes in this book more understandable. The book and movie that this novel reminds me of is The Color Purple. Their plots are very different, but they both have themes about independence, and self worth. Both males and females would enjoy this book, however especially females can relate. Books can open your horizons and make you realize the universal feelings of growing up and of living the affects of history.
" 'I handed Kathy Jo the kite and asked her where she wanted me to sit. She took my present and told me to sit in the kitchen and they would call me if they needed anything.' 'No, she didn't, Grandma.' 'Yes, she did chile. I looked into Kathy Jo's eyes and they were cold as blue ice.' " I chose this quote because it shows the legacy of racism and the pain it inflicts. Sinclair writes in a very upfront and personal manner. Each word seems to come from the heart, and from experience. This novel is written with a crafty tinge that warps you into the story, not as an onlooker, but as a participant with Stevie.

The Famous Heroine/The Plumed Bonnet (Dark Angel), by Mary Balogh

Beloved New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh spins two classic stories of Regency England—splendid novels of mistaken identity and unmistakable passion, where marriage is only the beginning of true love.

THE FAMOUS HEROINE
Cora Downes has beauty, spirit, and money, but no breeding. Yet when she gains renown for a daring rescue, she finds herself thrust into high society. Innocent and adrift in a world of beautiful banquets, bejeweled gowns, and snobbish standards, Cora is quickly compromised into a marriage—to a frivolous lord whose interests seem to lie elsewhere. But could piercingly blue-eyed and well-mannered Francis Kneller turn out to be the most unexpected love of her life?

THE PLUMED BONNET
Alistair Munro, the Duke of Bridgwater, is looking for love outside the bounds of polite society. And that’s what he expects to receive when he rescues a seemingly disreputable girl in a colorful bonnet off the side of the road. Yet Stephanie Gray, a former governess, has recently come into money and is eager for a proper match with a well-born man. Sure that he’s sullied her name, Alistair offers marriage to make amends. And in this unlikely union, Stephanie and Alistair make a welcome discovery—that sometimes it’s possible to marry first, then fall in love.

An enjoyable trip back to 1990s Signet Regencies.
By OLT
These two stories tie in nicely as sequels to Dark Angel/Lord Carew's Bride, re-released together in February 2010. Although, for me, Balogh's superior work is found in her longer "Slightly" series, a few of the "Simply" books, and perhaps my personal favorite, The Secret Pearl, her shorter Signet Regencies from the 1990s are top-of-the-line in that category and make for a feel-good read.

THE FAMOUS HEROINE is the story of Cora Downes, whose family has money but no blue blood. She "rescues" the nephew of the Duke of Bridgwater from drowning and is taken on by the duke's mother as a project to be introduced to society and married off to someone eligible, but not super blue-blooded. This story is funny, starts off delightfully and I found myself chuckling many times. The hero, Lord Francis Kneller, younger son of a duke, is the suitor rejected by Samantha in LORD CAREW'S BRIDE and he's still nursing a broken heart. He befriends Cora as a favor to his friend Bridgwater and finds her to be a pleasant distraction from his misery and entertaining company.

Now, Francis favors wearing clothes of all the colors of the rainbow, pink, puce, turquoise, vivid green, you name it, dressed up with lace and elaborately-tied cravats, and he's always immaculately coiffed. Cora, who is totally intimidated by most members of the ton, finds herself comfortable in his company. She also mistakes his sexual orientation, so she enjoys him as a friend and not as a possible suitor. It's all good fun, but somewhere past the halfway point of the story, I was beginning to tire of Cora's ineptness in society and Francis's broken heart, so it wasn't a 5-star romance for me, in spite of the good writing and the satisfying ending.

THE PLUMED BONNET is a bit more angsty and I enjoyed it more. It's another upper-class/middle-class romance, but less humorous. Balogh always does a good job of convincing the reader that young, handsome, rich dukes of excellent character existed in Regency England and that romance with a lovely heroine of lesser breeding would have challenges but is perfectly doable (at least by the end of the story). Her Cinderella stories have always appealed to me more than those of other writers using the same theme, perhaps because of her sympathetic characters and the trademark Balogh style of writing.

Our hero here is the Duke of Bridgwater, of the family that sponsored Cora in the first story. He's on the road traveling and meets up with hitchhiking (Imagine that!) heroine Stephanie Gray. Stephanie is respectable but impoverished and had been working as a governess when she was informed that she has inherited property and lots of money. Instead of waiting for the transportation which was to be sent for her, she sets off on her own but mishaps along the way have her penniless and unable to continue her journey to Sindon Park, her inheritance. She even loses her own cloak and bonnet and is forced to wear a borrowed fuchsia cloak and pink bonnet with pink, fuchsia and purple plumes. In her moneyless desperation she is walking to her destination, without even coins to purchase a meal for herself.

Alistair, the duke, spies her walking the road. Well, she's hard to miss in that get-up. He's bored and feeling unsatisfied with his life so, mistaking her for a lady of ill-repute, he decides to spice up his life with her company and offers her a ride. The rest you just have to read. The beginning is a lot of fun, what with the mistaken impressions both have of each other. When circumstances force Alistair to offer marriage to Stephanie, the rest of the book is about the expectations they have for each other, the importance of communication, and the need to be true to who you are. The characters are well-drawn and sympathetic, the writing is excellent and the ending is just about perfect.

a great buy: two memorable romances
By An Amazon Customer
Mary Balogh is an exceptional writer. Though these are not my favorite romances by
Balogh, they are very entertaining. Likeable characters, solid plots, a detailed world,
plus excellent command of language make these novels easy 5's. They continue the story
started in Dark Angel/Lord Carew's Bride. In Dark Angel,
Samantha Newman plays a secondary part, hurt by a villain. In Lord Carew's
Bride, Samantha is the heroine. She marries Lord Carew (shortly after meeting him) and
rejects Lord Kneller (who had pursued her for years). The Duke of Bridgwater
and Kneller (though Kneller certainly was badly hurt by Samantha's rejection) helped
Samantha's match with Carew.

In The Famous Heroine, the Duke of Bridgwater asks Kneller (his close friend)
to help Bridgwater's mother launch a young woman Cora Downes into society. Cora has no
pretensions to any noble lineage, but her father is a very wealthy merchant.
Bridgwater's mother, who is very class conscious, wants to help Cora get an
acceptable marriage, because she "saved" the life of Bridgwater's heir's
heir. "Save" is in quotes because the story of Cora's heroism has gotten ridiculously out of
hand. Ultimately Cora's disregard of convention leads to a forced marriage to
Kneller. Cora likes Kneller, but is convinced for silly reasons, that he will not be able
to father children (and all that goes with it, which though she is unclear on
what it all is, she would prefer to have it than not). Everything works out (of course).

In The Plumed Bonnet, Bridgwater, who is very sophisticated and urbane gets
hoisted by his own petard into a forced marriage with the Stephanie Gray.
There is a lot of humor here, which I will not spoil. Stephanie is a
poorly-treated governess, who inherited great wealth with an unpleasant
proviso that she needed to be quickly married part. She had resigned herself
to a life without love or the companionship of marriage, and the forced
nature of the marriage makes her doubt that marriage to Bridgwater will be in
name only. This being a Balogh romance, the doubts are eventually quashed.)

Delicious

I want more stars to give The Famous Heroine.

Love, love, love this book. Regencies often feature a misunderstanding between the main characters as they work forward towards a good relationship, and this misunderstanding is a dozy. The heroine assumes that the hero is gay, up to and including their wedding night.

Lord Francis Kneller, the rejected suitor from Lord Carew's Bride, and surely the most charming of Balogh's heroes, agrees to help bring cit Cora Downes, sponsored by the Duchess of Bridgewater after saving her small grandson from drowning, into fashion and in the process becomes embroiled in many of the impetuous Cora's "unfortunate" escapades, many of which simply seem to happen to her.

Filled with delightful farce and humor and people who actually like each other.

Francis' wise decision to be amused by Cora instead of offended by her makes him a happy man. A good object lesson in how we can all make our lives happy by how we decide to respond to what we cannot control in our lives.

I am looking forward to rereading this one in a few years. Right up there with the best of Georgette Heyer.

The Best Coming-Of-Age Story Ever (Sorry, J.D. Salinger)
By A Customer
For as long as people have been coming-of-age in our society, authors have tried to capture the extraordinarily diverse array of feelings associated with adolescence. Many have successfully captured some aspect, some portion of those feelings, but usually through a specific lens or promoting a specific agenda. Nobody has succeeded in simply describing, with little embellishment and no judgmentalism, how it really feels to be a teenager in America. Nobody, that is, except Cameron Crowe.

Nearly 20 years ago, Crowe went undercover to spend a year inside a high school in southern California. Going in, Crowe was already a seasoned reporter on music and pop culture, but was youthful enough to appear legitimate as a high school student. He forged relationships with students that were just close enough to learn all the details of their lives, but not too close to interfere with what he was trying to observe.

As fans of the entertaining movie (The first effort of "Clueless" director Amy Heckerling) are well aware, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" is filled with enough teenage sex, drug use, rivalry, and relationship angst to be amusing on a purely visceral level. The book, however, is able to examine the real people behind the images. We learn that Linda is not quite as sexually confident as she first appears, that Damone is frightened and lonely behind the tough-guy swagger. We see that Brad and Stacy share a complicated sibling love, not just the rivalry. We understand what it was really like to be ad Ridgemont High in the late 1970's.

What continues to set this book apart twenty years later is the timlessness and diversity of its characters. There is no one single character who stands out; instead Crowe focuses on a range of people who between them reflect the full range of American youth. Time has not diminished the power or the universality of the characters' emotions. Twenty years later, Crowe's work remains an American masterpiece.

As Good As the Movie
By A. Ross
I bet you didn't even know this was a book before it was a movie, did you? The first thing to know is that the book is much better than the movie. The definitive novel about early 80s Southern California high-school life, it is actually based on real events, as its subtitle "A True Story" tells you. Cameron Crowe apparently actually attended high-school for a year to do a "portrait" of contemporary high-school life. Fast Times is what emerged. While fairly faithful to the story, the movie diminishes the roles of Mark "the Rat" and Brad, and pumps up the role of Spicoli (who is a freshman in the book). It's a quick read, and well worth it if you want a light-hearted period book. It can be a little hard to find, if you see a first edition, buy it, I guarantee it will become a collectible.

Very informative + the photos are fantastic!
By Amazon Customer
When I picked up Padma Lakshmi’s The Encyclopedia of Spices and Herbs last weekend, I knew what I was getting into. This book was not going to be exciting. It was not going to have a lot of recipes and it certainly was going to be very different than her memoir, an audiobook that I had finished not too long ago. I read this book cover to cover in a little over 4 hours, with some inevitable help from Google to look at photos of things described. This was also one of those pieces of media that remind me that yes, English is my second language.

The book lives up to what you would expect from something that has the word Encyclopedia in the title. It is well organized, with an alphabetized list of spices and herbs from around the world and their botanical names. The book refers to itself on a lot of pages, and you do not have to read it all alphabetically. I read the section on Chillies first, and then Salt, and then went to page 52 to see how Padma describes Chaat Masala. Spices, their taste, origins, preparation methods and food pairings are explained well.

The most interesting thing I learned was how many types of Thyme are there, and the many ways they can be used. I also finally have a handle on how Mustard and Fenugreek are different from each other. The photos are beautiful, too- which makes it a decent coffee table prop for those of us who sometimes obsess over aesthetics.

Overall, 4 out of 5 stars. 5/5 if I compare it to how I felt about Padma’s memoir.

A must have for your kitchen
By George M
This is a must have if you are even a little serious about cooking. I wanted it after seeing her on the Late Show, yes a Colbert bump. I am so glad I did. In fact I bought two more as Xmas gifts, yes it is that good. In-depth knowledge is shared on each spice, some I have never heard about before, their uses including some medicinal uses, how much to use, what it would be good on or in, taste profile and so on. Fennel Pollen? I had no idea this even existed!

Do not be put off by the silly reviewers saying there are not recipes, it is not a cookbook nor does it say that it is. If you want a cookbook, buy one, don't slam a book because it is not something it doesn't say it is. BUT, it is a wonderful resource for every kitchen, and it does that very well.

It is an Encyclopedia, of great spices, get it, you will not be disappointed.

The North Transept of Reims Cathedral: Design, Construction, and Visual Programs (AVISTA Studies in the History of Medieval Technology, Sci

This interdisciplinary volume in the AVISTA series is the first book to focus solely on the north transept of Reims Cathedral, the portion of the gothic building that served as the canons' primary entrance to the cathedral from their adjoining cloister in the thirteenth century. Despite the importance of its sculpture and stained glass, as well as its ritual use by the canons, the north transept remains one of the least understood portions of the cathedral--in part because its sequence of construction is so complex, even improvised. Until recently, important archaeological evidence of the transept's substructures was unavailable. This is, however, no longer the case. The current volume presents this new subterranean evidence alongside careful studies of the stones above ground, analysis of the geometry used in the transept's design, iconographic and stylistic studies of its sculpture and glass, and extant medieval documents, which record events bearing upon its construction. Essays by international specialists of the cathedral's archaeology, architecture, sculpture, and stained glass address issues of the north transept's evolving design and visual programs, thereby significantly clarifying and revising the building's chronology. Essays also consider the meaning of its visual programs in light of architectural adaptation and contemporary socio-historical events--whether royal coronations or the infamous revolts of the local burghers. In addition to presenting a readily accessible state of the research on the north transept, the volume also provides a model for interdisciplinary and international collaboration in the study of medieval buildings.

THE Real Indiana Jones
By Pop Bop
Andrews was the real deal; exactly the kind of over-the-top scientist/adventurer you would expect him to be as the true life inspiration for Indiana Jones.

But while that's all terribly romantic and gripping, you wonder how well he does as a writer, especially when telling his own life story. Well that's one of the best parts. The book is a complete hoot. Andrews is humble, except when he isn't. He's restrained, except when he's not. He is modest about his actual life details, (his youth, his connection to the Museum), but he delivers on the matter of his grand adventures. There's a bit of stiff upper lip and a certain manly sang froid, but the things he did were too cool to be tamped down and turned into just a bland travelogue. And sometimes his deadpan delivery and understatement make an adventure even more compelling.

This is full bore "Boys Own" adventure, and the fact that it is real just adds an extra dimension. Roy Chapman Andrews was a rare character, and this is a rare book. Well worth searching out.

A great book by the real life Indiana Jones! Roy Chapman Andrews brings us back to the golden age of exploration, one freed from the monotony of modern day political correctness.
