Comprehensive, Scholarly, and Difficult to Read

This book is a very interesting book about a much misunderstood area of Islam. It is comprehensive in that it covers the intellectual aspects of Sufism as well as the organizational aspects. Many books are available that cover the teaching and beliefs of Sufis (the intellectual aspects) and still others cover the tariqas and different orders of Sufism (the organizational aspects) but Trimingham's text covers both aspects together in one volume. The reason for my 4 star rating is that the text is a very difficult read. It tends to jump around a bit and it incorporates a lot of Arabic terms that require the reader to bounce back and forth between the section they are reading and the glossary of Arabic terms. I guess one can look at this as a positive as well because it forces a better understanding of Arabic terms but it tends to make the reading slow.

Good book but can be lacking

This book almost set the standard. While there are many books of its kind in say Arabic or Turkish there are not many in English that cover a brief history of all of the major Sufi orders.

The book details the history of Sufism, the early Sufis and then the establishment of the Sufi orders to the present day (or to be more exact the late 60s which it seems this is all the book goes up to)

I would not say this book is difficult to read unless you know almost nothing concerning Sufism in which case A Schimmel Mystical Dimentions of Islam or one of the books of William Chittick or R.A Nicholson may be of more use to you.

One slight problem though, there are a few errors in this book and very little covers Sufism in Turkey or the Ottoman Empire. There is some interesing passages concerning Sufism in Africa though which judging by his other works is his main field.

Aimed at Experts

Much of this book, especially in the beginning, reads like a jargon-filled, complicated encyclopedia. Trimingham crams much information in here without successfully elaborating upon it or illustrating the points of highlights and importance. Only the patient, academic reader will come away with some real increased knowledge. If Trimingham is an expert on Sufism, he is not an expert in being concise, simple or direct. So - if you're an expert you may give this book 3 or 4 stars for its comprehensive details - but you'll have to look past the jargony, technical, and cramped style in which it is written. Those interested in a simple or concise introduction to Sufism should look elsewhere.

A book to study and study. A true masterpiece of revelation underpinned by the Word

This book brings together our Hebraic roots with Christology in a way no other author has done before. Being a theologian, a mystic, a philosopher and an historian, one sees how the author blends these expertises together as a tapestry. God always has withheld knowledge to man requiring maturity obedience and intimacy before revelation and the Bible is a code book of His to study not read.
What does one learn about God and His creation of everything as well as the Heavens ? That we as men are at the fulcrum of all His plans. That we need to purify ourselves as we ascend the mountain. No anger, no fear, understanding our significance and insignificance in the big picture. No spirit of offence.That the Kingdom of God and His heavens are in our heart. Numerology and the binary system as well as the constellations, tribes of Israel and the twelve original apostles play an important part in the decoding. So much meat in this book and confirmation to some, conviction to others. He has made his Heavenly Father very proud with this part one of the trilogy. Cannot wait for book two.

Awesome

Phenomenal book. No other like it, describing the heavenly structures and how we interact with them. It helped me understand things in my own life I've struggled with, especially as a firstborn son, and things I'm currently encountering and dealing with. Really helped me to understand the why of the process I've been going through and understand where I was at in the heavenly dimensions at the time. If you enjoy the deep, cutting edge things of God, and desire to walk as a King, Priest, and manifested Som of God, this book is for you.

M. S. Thambirajah, MBBS, FRCPsych (UK), is working in the UK as a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. Soooo good

Honestly, I love these books. I've been waiting for the third installment of this series like a stalker. Now that I've read it I am completely jonesin' for the next. They're that good.

"Rise" starts out where we left off after what they are now calling bloody Tuesday. I know you can read the synopsis so I won't reiterate it. However, I will add that Ren and all the others are closer, more so now than ever. This also includes Constantine and Dare and more interaction with them in many scenes. Love it. The characters are genuine and dialogue flows naturally according to each personality. Nothing seems forced or contrived--something in which I need to truly fall into a story. Good vs. bad is not so easy to define and characters struggle, sympathize, manipulate, and fight for eachother.

A story with broad appeal!! Fantasy bursting with discerning characters and limitless imagination!!

The first 3 books of a planned 4-book series (The Awakening of Ren Crown, the Protection of Ren Crown, and now the Rise of Ren Crown) have been so satisfying to read and absorb. Satisfying in the sense that what you want out of a book--a heroine who truly is willing to sacrifice herself for the well-being of others, whip-smart dialogue/character interactions [as another reviewer on Goodreads put it: these people don't have time for nonsense], and a seemingly endless fountain of world-building and creativity talked about, shown, and organically "used" by the characters [to that end, a magic-system and world that honestly rivals that of Harry Potter for me]--is present and active in this narrative, satisfying at least my desire for a "good" story.

It's so natural to hope for the chance for redemptive endings in this narrative-- for the world I've come to know and cherish, though that chance seems murky and dim at this point in the story (as it should!) and I eagerly anticipate how the author will surprise us readers with the plot in hopefully (oh, I so hope!) tying up the loose ends of this fractured world into an ultimate, and ultimately-satisfying redemptive denouement. What I'm trying to say is that the author has shrewdly written a narrative that I CARE about, that I'm invested in and want to see characters and the world they live in mended and brought from brokenness to wholeness, just like Harry Potter for me or Narnia.

If you long for a story, a narrative that pulls you into a dynamic, thought-provoking, imagination-bending, and character-driven world, then you've come to the right series. I fear I'm rambling but it's so hard to define the attraction I experience for this story. One element that is key is that while Ren may (and it may not come to fruition) have a romance in the works, there's a sense in which the romance is always on the cusp, on the brink of coming to fruition, but because our heroine "doesn't have time for nonsense" she values her friendships with others far above and beyond any romantic commitment. In other words, Ren seems to have her head on straight in what she values--which is connection and community far more than her individual desires and impulses--a wisdom beyond her years [though she isn't perfect, by any means and she is growing as a character]. Ren is dynamic--not static and I love that about her.

I also value the depth of character to those surrounding Ren. Again, Harry Potter comes to mind. Rowling didn't focus all her ingenuity onto only Harry. There was complexity and dynamic growth in others as well. The cast of characters in Zoelle's story have their roles to play and they inhabit them with aplomb and heart, among other things.

I favor longer stories, so if you do too, then these books are for you. Invest your time in these books--it is time well spent. Thank you, whoever the author truly is, for your gift--thanks for continuing to write this story--I for one, as an adult reader always searching for a story I can immerse myself in and come out the other side thankful I did, am glad.

In book one, Zoelle introduces her magically layered world via Ren Crown, a dangerously magical late bloomer. Book two hit upon Ren's talents, her desire to protect those she loves, and her brilliant mind adjusting to an influx of knowledge in a new world which culminated in a cliff hanger. This installment was well worth the wait. While the story advancement wasn't as fulfilling as book two - book three barely spanned a few days versus the semester long fashion of the first two books - character development plays front and center. The readers comes to see corruption of power, Con and Dare's character in relation to Ren and each other, Ren's effect on those around her, be they friend or foe, and how she might fit into (and alter) the magical world, if only she can remain free. There is Ren's acceptance that she is the catalyst for change and she has an army of powerful 'delinquents' at her back but all their motives might not be altruistic. The reader is left wanting more and filled with questions. How do Neph's powers work? Is Raphael the true danger or should he be pitied for the madness he was led to by the Department and Olivia's mother? Will Ren lose her freedom to the Dare family in order to avoid a cell in the Department? What are Alex's motives? Can Olivia be cured? These questions beg to be answered in the coming installments.

The subject of this book is operator theory on the Hardy space H2, also called the Hardy-Hilbert space. This is a popular area, partially because the Hardy-Hilbert space is the most natural setting for operator theory. A reader who masters the material covered in this book will have acquired a firm foundation for the study of all spaces of analytic functions and of operators on them. The goal is to provide an elementary and engaging introduction to this subject that will be readable by everyone who has understood introductory courses in complex analysis and in functional analysis. The exposition, blending techniques from "soft" and "hard" analysis, is intended to be as clear and instructive as possible. Many of the proofs are very elegant.

This book evolved from a graduate course that was taught at the University of Toronto. It should prove suitable as a textbook for beginning graduate students, or even for well-prepared advanced undergraduates, as well as for independent study. There are numerous exercises at the end of each chapter, along with a brief guide for further study which includes references to applications to topics in engineering.

Excellent, Clear Exposition

Very nice introduction to Hardy Spaces via H^2, perhaps the most natural and easily grasped of all the H^p spaces. The author goes into considerable detail in developing shift operators, inner/outer functions, Blaschke products and Toeplitz/Hankel operators as the fundamental tools. The point of view is almost exclusively from a complex analysis perspective. This is not a criticism, because the book explicitly concentrates on H^2 and is a great introduction to the broader topic. I'm so glad I came across this book..

This book was recommended to me by a relative of Dee's: one of my early managers - so I was curious to see what it was about. I started reading it in early January and found I was learning so many useful things that I'm reading it very slowly (it's now the end of February!) so that I can practice what I'm learning. I've just completed the first master class in the book and it has given me lots of new business offering ideas which I've already added to my website as well as exploring with my Associates. It's very readable and makes this whole area seem so simple. I'm finding myself recommending this as a must-have book for people who are not comfortable with the 'selling' part of their business!

This book is truly a valuable resource. Dee presents a great wealth of information on all aspects important to small businesses. The tips are shared in a non-technical and very usable way. The examples included are also extremely helpful. I will refer back to this book often!

Have just put your book down to get the first review on the net. I am up to page 67 already. Already well worth the money. Dee works with me on my High Barn Oils marketing strategy. I am sure this book is just like having her right here in the office. I can hear her saying every word. You want her in your office, You need her in your office, buy the book now it's nearly as good as having a living and breathing Dee in your office.
