About the Author
André Gushurst-Moore is a writer and teacher of English. He is currently Director of Pastoral Care at Downside School, attached to the Benedictine abbey in Somerset, where he has also been a House Master and Head of the English Department. His work has appeared in the Catholic Herald, The Salisbury Review, the St. Austin Review, The Chesterton Review, The University Bookman, American Arts Quarterly, and the Political Science Reviewer.

A Must Read

Andre Gushurst-Moore tackles what most would dare not, to delve into the tradition of orthodoxy, the common mind and attempt to string it all together into a coherent whole. Gushurst-Moore artfully weaves G.K. Chesterton throughout the book as his touchstone, the uniting force of close to five centuries of orthodox thought. His section on Eliot in particular is lucid and concrete, avoiding the typical pitfalls and cutting straight to the core of Eliot's work. What he accomplishes in the end is to piece together the fragments of twelve of the greatest minds in the orthodox tradition and arrange them into a mosaic whole, effectively setting the lands of orthodoxy in order, a feat Eliot himself would be proud of. A must read for any student, fulltime or hobbyist, of the modernist era.

A Worthwhile, Commendable Survey

Andre Gushurst-Moore's latest book, The Common Mind, is founded on a straightforward concept: That there is a clear, bright line running through the thought of major thinkers across the last five hundred years of Western history. This line of thought is fundamentally concerned with establishing a stable social and political order, and springs from the rich intellectual tradition of the West.

Gushurst-Moore's book is unique in that it posits a fairly simple central thesis, but vindicates it not with an intensely focused study, but instead a broader survey of twelve writers and thinkers of Western Civilization. These thinkers range from the obvious (Thomas More, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, TS Eliot) to the more obscure (Orestes Brownson is an odd choice for this book). Further, though all were writers and thinkers, they come from a variety of fields - poetry, law, government, the Church, theology, and philosophy. Each of these twelve men gets a relatively brief chapter to themselves, written in chronological order and mostly building off of the previous chapters. The book is clearly designed to work as a sort of snowball; each writer rolls into the next, eventually building a broad intellectual consensus across generations: the common mind. Gushurst-Moore quotes liberally and accurately from the writers, and paints a clear picture of their thinking from cover to cover. The book features a brief introduction, which proposes Gushurst-Moore's central thesis, and a conclusion that looks to the future of the common mind.

This book is generally effective in its attempt to paint a picture of a single concept running through the thinking of its subjects. Gushurst-Moore is adept at dealing with different sorts of thinkers in a lucid manner, and does a commendable job of making them accessible to the average reader. The great virtue of this book is just this: that it is easily accessible for any level of reader, whether casual or academic. However, it also seems clear that this text is more directed at the casual reader. Each chapter is brief, giving only a taste of the given writer, and is not particularly useful as an academic study of the many author's discussed. Some chapters are weaker than others; TS Eliot and John Henry Newman stand out as particularly well written, while the section on Samuel Johnson is less clear. Further, Gushurst-Moore makes no effort to hide his ideological prejudices, sometimes to his detriment: a reference to "the modern tenured radicals of the academy" was particularly irritating.

These quibbles aside, Gushurt-Moore has written a pithy, intelligent, and accessible book that is clear in its thesis and engaging in its execution. I'd heartily recommend it to any reader searching for a useful survey of Western political and social thought, or someone looking for a jumping-off point into a fantastic cross-section of writers.

An impressive and helpful work

Gushurst-Moore is somehow able to give a sweeping view of this unlikely group of writers in order to show that they all speak a universal language. Their stark differences are able to distill their commonalities -- indeed, their common mind -- and the author is able to deftly present this while neither bogging the reader down in details nor passing too quickly and distantly over each. One of his subjects, G.K. Chesterton, writes, "We have found the common things at last/ Like marriage and a creed, / So I may safely write now,/ And you may safely read." It is this set of common things, the integration of parts and wholes, the liberal arts, Christian humanism, common law, the formation of conscience, that form the common pieces of not just Christendom but the whole of human experience. Gushurst-Moore selects 12 minds of the last half millennium who saw these things and their universality with particular clarity, and demonstrates their shared vision in an ongoing conversation in the way they continue to support, shape, and inform one another, and in doing so continue to shape and inform the cultural project of Christian humanism as it exists today. A quick, thorough, and nimble work that skilfully commands many parts to reveal a single broad idea: the Common Mind.

A really good introduction, in spite of typos and mistakes

The first edition of this book was a nightmare because of many mistakes, typos and errors in examples, problems and calculations.

The second edition presents a much more polished text, but several errors remain. I cannot understand how is this possible, with almost ten years between the two editions. Even worse, the new additions to the text contain errors as well!

- Just one example of an old mistake also present in the first edition: the blackjack game (p 44) has errors in the calculation of the probabilities. The Figure 2.13 last probabilities are not 1/2 and 1/2, but 2/3 and 1/3.

- Another example, this time of a new mistake in a new figure: The Figure 2.9.a Eu = 1 value is wrong. It should be Eu = 0.6.

- Gardner introduces a new Appendix for explaining the Bayes' rule (p. 268-270), and there is a stupid mistake again. In page 270 we have p(B/A') = .01, and he replaces p(B/A') with .04 in p(B) = P(B/A)p(A)+ p(B/A')p(A'), so all the following results are wrong.

There are also mistakes in the on-line resources for the instructors: many problems' solutions contains errors in the calculations!

Etc, etc, etc...

The real problem with this book is this. The approach is very interesting but the book is a minefield due to the many, many typos, errors, mistakes and wrong calculations.

It cannot be recommended as a manual for a course because of this reason.

Great Gift for Any Internationalist or Would-Be Internationalist

Applewood Books has produced here a fascinating and useful comparison to and contrast with their uniform editions of The Declaration of Independence with Short Biographies of Its Signers, The Constitution of the United States of America, which is also available from them in Spanish Constitucion de Los Estados Unidos, and especially The Bill of Rights with Writings That Formed Its Foundation. This little book contains the text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Preamble and the 31 Articles, in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, and Arabic. (Each translation takes up 8 or 9 pages.)

While it would be difficult to criticize the first 21 articles, Articles 22 on stray into the dangerous area of "positive rights", which unless consciously and knowingly agreed to ahead of time, amount to a "right" to pick someone else's pocket or take away someone else's rights. Of course like so many of the nobler ideals of the United Nations, they've been honored more in the breach than in the observance; the only nations making any serious attempts to abide by them being of course those free and democratic nations whose citizens already possess similar rights under their own laws and constitutions. Still, even with the necessary caveats against the last 9 articles, it contains ideals worth striving for, assuming such efforts are directed against the "less free" countries rather than the "more free" countries.

I got this as a graduation present for a friend who likes foreign politics and has the name Eleanor. The synthetic leather looks convincing and real. The paper quality was nice. This is a pretty small book, but could be displayed proudly to display one's appreciation for decent human treatment.

Educational Quick Read

I picked this book up in the airport with the expectation of learning more about the Bin Laden family. I had always read that Osama had an enormous extended family but had never known much more. Carmen Bin Ladin focuses on the struggles that Saudi women are faced with while telling her story of life as a Bin Laden in Saudi Arabia in the late 70's. I recommed this autobiography to those who are just beginning to explore the topic of Muslim practices and Saudi Arabia.

The author lived with her divorced Persian mother in Switzerland. The author met her husband, Yeslam bin Ladin (Laden is the extended family name), who was a younger brother of Osama bin Laden. Her courtship extended between Europe and California, where both went to college. With the extended family wealth, they lived in Saudi Arabia, but took frequent trips to Europe and America. While in S.A., she detailed her experiences while living in wearing the Chador cloak, and the problems of not being able to drive a car, nor could she even walk across the street from her house to her cousin's house alone - she had to have a male companion. She details not being able to visit a cinema, go swimming, no concerts - a restricted, boring `lassitude' lifestyle for women. She never saw one of her many (40) sisters-in-law read a book. She had a tennis court built so that she could play tennis, but she had to have the tennis rackets imported through diplomatic bags - so that the customs officials could not confiscate them. She learned that both Saudi men and hired male servants would not listen to her commands - she had to find some male relative to give instructions. She noted the time that when a young Saudi female refused to marry a prince, she tried to flee the county, but was captured and shot (p. 107). She met Osama only a couple of times, and talked with him only very briefly - but she saw his hatred towards the `West.' She did the lesser umra pilgrimage to the Kaaba. As she bore only daughters, her marriage crumbled, he was ignoring her, and she finally caught him `dating' another woman. She sought a divorce in Europe, but as her husband disputed it - the divorce proceedings barley crawled through the European court system. Not until after the 9/11/2001 New York Twin Towers attack, was the author able to finally convince a European judge to grant her a divorce - from the bin Laden family. She was able to keep her daughters in New York City, rather than allowing her ex entice them to return to Saudi Arabia and keep her from seeing them. As dancing was forbidden, she took her daughters to Europe to learn social dancing. Maids ironed on the carpet, rather than getting an ironing board. Other families would not allow their maids to sit on the coaches. Carmen discusses Saudi customs, but doesn't explain their tie-ins to the hadith; observances, but no serious religious analysis. Not a deep, detailed study of Saudi life (dolls were faceless, foreigners couldn't buy property, the bin Laden's were the only ones with detailed maps of Mecca, how the Saudi schools taught children to hate Jews), but interesting in learning Carmen's views of living inside the extended bin Laden family.

An insight into the mysterious Saudi kingdom, which tourists cannot visit without a written invitation. Carmen bin Laden married the brother of Osama (one of some 20 or so siblings) and found to her dismay that she became a virtual prisoner there, completely at the mercy of her husband's family. Born and raised in Switzerland and a completely western woman, the shocking discovery of her new status occurred upon her arrival in Saudi Arabia for her wedding. Her battle to remain a free woman and raise her daughters in the western way, her story is riveting.

I'm one of those people who believe that you can accomplishanything if you set your mind to it. Hence the reason I write very strongfemales that demand to do things for myself. My female characters might beemotional, but that's okay, they are women, but they all have a backbone, orthey discover that they have the strength to stand on their own two feet. Mymale characters help them along the way, and while they are all strong leadsthemselves, they learn quickly not to step into the way of what a woman wants.

Stacy Eaton began her writing career in October of 2010 andas each year goes by, she releases more and more novels. Stacy recently took anearly retirement from law enforcement after over fifteen years of service, withher last three in investigations and crime scene investigation.

Stacy resides in southeastern Pennsylvania with her husband, who works in lawenforcement, and her teen daughter who is working toward her second degreeblack belt in Tae Kwon Do and on the choral and cheerleading squads at school.She also has a son who is currently serving in the United States Navy.

A great read that's wonderfully written

There were so many reasons to enjoy and love this story written by Stacy Eaton. First off Six Days of Memories starts out with action—and the ending hooks for chapter one and two MADE me keep reading even though it was well past the time I should’ve turned out the lights and called it a day.

I’ve always enjoyed a mystery mixed with a romance, and this story has them both and then some. The action is immediate, and the dialogue is fresh and fast paced with no wasted words. I was carried away on an interesting story between several characters that I got to know easily through Stacy’s writing style. The secondary characters were awesome, but I loved the main character, detective Natasha Foster. She’s strong, has a great sense of who she is and wants to be, holds an interesting job she excels at, and is honest with herself and everyone around her. I’m sure that the fact Ms. Eaton shares a career in law enforcement only added to the reasons I found Natasha so “real”. I also liked the hero, Jay. Stacy did a great job in making his amnesia believable without going over the top, and at the same time keeping his character strong, full of integrity, and most important—likable.

The bond between Natasha and Jay is evident the moment they share the same page. They are instantly attracted to each other, but Natasha has a job to do and that’s to help Jay figure out whom he is and if he’s involved in a horrific case involving a car crash, two dead bodies, and a duffel bag full of money. Jay has to keep his attraction to Detective Foster in check as well—even though it’s difficult. After all, he knows nothing of his past—is he married, does he have a girlfriend, a family—or worse yet is he a criminal? Any of these will automatically kill any chance at something more developing between him and Natasha.

And the tattoo bond between these two was just icing on the cake. I enjoyed that aspect of the story and the little reveal toward the end that explained how it came to be. Sorry, I won’t share too much about that because I don’t want to spoil anyone else’s discovery :)

Another thing I like when I’m reading a book—that this story had in spades—is while turning the pages I’m able to learn something too. This book gave me several insights, including—tattoos, tae kwan do, karate—and that the next time I make pancakes I need to add vanilla to the batter.

All in all, this story is strongly written with lots of twists and turns. There were a few times I wondered just how Ms. Eaton would make aspects of Jay’s past work out and give him the future he wanted and deserved—and needless to say she did an excellent job in accomplishing these tasks and still making you LOVE her characters.

Six Days of Memories is a book I know I’ll read again. Definitely one I recommend and will add to my keeper shelf.

A Love Story - and much more

I just finished this book by Stacy Eaton and couldn't wait to let you and Ms Eaton know that - I think this is the best of all her books. First chapter pulls you in to a police investigation of an auto accident that soon develops into much more, leading you to chapter after chapter of suspense and the development of a great love story. Once you start reading, it will be hard to put down. What I love most about Eaton's style of writing is the talent she has to always writing the story with twist and turns that you would not expect, but are believable. Lots of behind the scene police work in this novel. The main story takes place in 6 days-- Boy a lot can happen in 6 days.

"The Ginger Apocalypse" strikes!

Frankie is one of the best, and arguably the most underrated comic in the omniverse. His writing is much more accessible than I'd have imagined, but that may be due to not having a thick brouge accent to wade through. He's brilliant and hilarious on stage, and very much the same on the page! I'd kill for an audiobook read by him.
