Roberta H. Winter was the editor of the Global Prayer Digest and author of Once More Around Jericho. Co-founder with her husband, Ralph D. Winter, of the U.S. Center for World Mission in Pasadena, California, Mrs. Winter was involved in teaching global mission history and sharing mission strategy in various forums. She was the mother of four daughters, all of whom with their husbands are involved in the task of reaching the "Hidden" (unreached) peoples of our world today. She died of cancer in October 2001, just 2 months before the Winter's 50th Wedding anniversary.

This book contains a selection of activities developed by Frank Ellis of GlaxoSmithKline and edited by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Socio-historical psychology

This is one of the earliest and still one of the best introductions to socio-historical psychology, the study of how individual human intelligence develops in interaction with people and the environment. In concert with many contemporary approaches in cognitive science today, Lev Vygotsky, A.R. Luria and A.N. Leontiev argued that human intelligence is characteristically mediated through objects and social activity. Humans think through tools. Talking to oneself, for example, is not an irrelevant activity. Putting one's actions into speech is a way of focusing one's consciousness on the problem. This kind of speech is not pointless, but rather a cognitive tool that gives one a greater awareness of one's own actions and makes it easier to modify these actions--a point that Vygotsky proved with research on how children solved problems. Much of human activity involves making use of tools, signs, and activities, the kinetic melodies of action and conceptualization that make us smart, and through which we are able to accomplish the uniquely human feats of complex intellectual action. This is an excellent place to begin studying Vygotsky and activity theory. If you like this you will also like A.R. Luria's *The Making of Mind*, and the classics *The Man With A Shattered World* and *The Mind of a Mnemonist*, the books that inspired Oliver Sacks' writing.

Revisionist Vygotsky - Save your money

This reissue of a 1978 reprint is supposedly a collection of Russian psychologist Vygotsky's essays (he died in 1934) as translated from the Russian by A.R. Luria, one of his students.
The "editors" claim that after a cursory study of Luria's translations "we came to believe that the image of Vygotsky as a sort of early neobehaviorist of cognitive development - an impression held by many of our colleagues- was strongly belied by these two works." Nice. A cursory study is able to strong belie widely held impressions that are based on decades of studying Vygotsky's own 1934 book Thought and Language, among his other works.
One has to wonder at the degree to which revisionism is taking place when the editors state in the preface:
"In putting separate essays together we have taken significant liberties. The reader will encounter here not a literal translation of Vygotsky but rather our edited translation of Vygotsky from which we have omitted material that seemed redundant and to which we have added material that seemed to make his points clearer."
Hmmmm. Will the real Vygotsky please stand up!
Save your money and first get Kozulin's version of "Thought and Language." One must question the amount of trustworthy scholarship in "Mind in Society."

Grade 3 Up. A lonely, elderly woman visits the park each day, where she notices a lonely boy, who sits on the bench by her. He is silent, watching the other children play. The unhappy youngster reminds her of her own childhood when she was comforted by a special closeness with her grandfather. She especially enjoyed her grandfather's stories, including one regarding a stone she'd found. Her grandfather calls it a worry stone, and spins a tale around it involving the Chumash people. When her grandfather dies, the child remembers it and is comforted. Now an old woman, she shares the stone and its stories with the boy on the bench. This sincere effort has a heavy touch. The telling is marred by an excess of sentiment and cliches (e.g., a "hacienda on the edge of time"). Gerig's watercolor illustrations are pretty, but overly romanticized, awash in lovely if unlikely color. Dengler's tale itself is profound and moving, if less than convincing. Gr. 3^-5. An original folktale in the spirit of the peaceful Chumash tribe of California centers this masterful picture book for older children. Spinning off from that tale are two other generation-linking stories. Amanda, an old woman, enjoys watching children play in the park but is troubled by a sad-faced child who silently shares her bench. Finally the boy tells her that the other children say he is too little to play with them. The boy's hurt reminds Amanda of her own childhood, and thus begins the second story. No one in her large family on the hacienda had time to play with her, no one except Grandfather. The highlight of their days together was the stories Grandfather shared. One was inspired by a shiny, smooth stone Amanda picked up on their morning walk. Calling her find a worry stone, Grandfather told her the story of the Indian bride Tokatu's tears for her dead husband--tears that became stones and, when rubbed slowly and thoughtfully, the stones seemed to ease the holder's troubles. Amanda didn't put much stock in her stone's powers until Grandfather died. Then she found that rubbing it brought back fond memories of Grandfather and soothed her pain. Amanda gives that same worry stone to the boy. Such a gift requires an explanatory story, which, in turn, leads to friendship between the old woman and the child, bringing full circle the power of storytelling to bridge and bond the generations. The poignant, heartwarming story is lyrically written and is illustrated with equal eloquence. Gerig's training in medical and biological illustration is apparent in the lifelike faces and postures done in watercolor and watercolor pencil. A picture-book treasure. Ellen Mandel

Three stories nest together but never mesh in this sentimental picture-book debut. An old woman--in a floppy hat with a red feather--sits in the park daily, and a small boy, ignored by his peers, sits with her in silence. She recalls the loneliness of her own childhood, assuaged by her grandfather, a storyteller. When she brought him an unusual stone she had found, Grandfather told her the Chumash legend of the worry stone: If it is rubbed gently, ``the worry goes away.'' The old woman gives her stone to the boy, with a story and a promise of more stories to come. Dengler notes she invented the Chumash legend at the center of the story; it's one in a series of contrivances that the gentle tone fails to disguise. A beautiful, touching story

This book has become one my family's favorites - hard to read without a catch in your voice. A story about the circle of life and the importance of grandfather/grandmother figures in a child's life. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! Beautiful illustrations!

I thought this book was outstanding and it will bring color into any child's life. This book would be a high-quality book for any parent or older sibling to read to a younger child because of the wonderful pictures and inspiring story within its cover. Also, it is a story that you can make happen in your own yard.

This story is about an elderly lady named Amanda who as a child had a wonderful, caring grandfather. They would spend all their time together, telling stories and she was very fond of him. One day she discovers a stone her grandfather says is a worry stone and by rubbing it in your hand all your worries go away. Now, several years later, her grandfather has passed away. She goes for walks in the park all by herself and is awfully lonely. One day, a little boy comes and sits next to her. He too is lonely. No other kids would play with him and Amanda can't stand to see him sad. Then she gets an idea. The worry stone could help. Does it help, and do Jason and Amanda become friends, or will both of them be lonely and alone?

This book is very touching and will show kids that read this book compassion and understanding. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. You should defiantly read this book to a child who is about 3years old and up. See how touching it is for yourself.

One of our family's top five books

This story is a beautiful interweaving of three stories, a Native American woman who loses her husband in war, a girl's relationship with her grandfather, and an old woman who discovers how to reach a lonely child that she has seen in the park. It is a gentle and lovely way to introduce to children the concept of death and a chance to discuss the value of the people we love in our lives and to understand the feelings of others. The story is wonderful in itself, but the illustrations make it even more so. They seem to glow with an inner light.

About the Author
Sir Ranulph Fiennes was the first man to reach both poles by surface travel and the first to cross the Antarctic Continent unsupported. In the 1960s he was removed from the SAS Regiment for misuse of explosives but, after joining the army of the Sultan of Oman, received that country's Bravery Medal on active service in 1971. He is the only person yet to have been awarded two clasps to the Polar medal for both Antarctic and the Arctic regions. Fiennes has led over thirty expeditions, including the first polar circumnavigation of the Earth, and in 2003 he ran seven marathons in seven days on seven continents in aid of the British Heart Foundation. In 1993 Her Majesty the Queen awarded Fiennes the Order of the British Empire (OBE) because, on the way to breaking records, he has raised over GBP14 million for charity. He was named Best Sportsman in the 2007 ITV Great Briton Awards and in 2009 he became the oldest Briton to reach the summit of Everest.

Unbelievable

I was so intrigued to know how this man was going to get himself out of so many difficult positions. It kept me up late at night wanting to know what he was going to do next. Definitely one for the adventurous. Only problem I had was knowing exactly where he was at certain times during his journey's. Wish I had a detailed map.

I enjoyed the book but thought the author (also the main character in the book) took too many unnecessary chances with other people's lives.Especially in the first part of the book. It improved as the book went along.It was however, a good read and his descriptions of the ice and snow were very good indeed.The story tells you about parts of the world that not a lot is known about and in parts it is gripping.
I would recommend the book.
