Early Aegean Warrior 5000-1450 BC, by Raffaele D'Amato, Andrea Salimbeti

The civilisations of the Greece in the Ancient World have inspired and fascinated throughout European history. The stories of Homer, later reinforced by the pioneering archaeological work carried out by men such as Heinrich Schliemann at Mycenae and Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos, have enabled modern researchers and historians to piece together a rich material culture and reconstruct the mysteries of the Ancient World.
The mainland and islands of Greece were extensively settled by peoples moving from Asia Minor in c.5000 BC, while a further wave in c.5000 BC introduced bronze-working to the region. It is form this point on that it is possible to discern a distinct Cycladic or Aegean civilisation, developing at roughly the same time as the Egyptian and Persian civilisations. Further to the south, the Minoan civilisation based on Crete held sway, and this power - along with the Helladic Achaeans to the north gradually swamped the Cycladic civilisation in between.
In common with most Bronze Age societies, the culture of the Aegean world was dominated by warfare, with the inhabitants living in organized settlements and small citadels with fortification walls and bulwarks, towers and gates to provide protection against invaders from the sea or internecine conflicts. Using the latest archaeological evidence, this title recreates the world of these peoples through a detailed examination of their material culture.

An excellent succinct overview of the subject making use of the latest archaeological evidence
By Yoda
First and foremost, any review of this book would have to begin with a quick discussion of the Osprey "Warrior" series format, of which it is part of. These books are relatively short, being only 48 pages in length (about a third of which consists of illustration). Hence if one is looking for an in-depth tome on the subject this is not the book to pick up. It can only serve, due to the limits of the format, as a succinct overview. A second point that needs to be made is that the author, Dr. Raffaele D'Amato, is extremely knowledgeable regarding the subject. He received his PhD in Roman-Byzantine studies, is the curator of the World Museum of Man and has written extensively on related topics (i.e., Osprey's "Bronze Age Greek Warriors 1600-11 BC"). This knowledge permeates the entire book.

Considering the limits of the format, the question that needs to be asked is how well does the book cover the subject? The answer is surprisingly well. This is so for a number of reasons. The most important, by far, is that includes the most up-to-date research on the subject. This research is nearly all in the form of archaeological evidence. The book is also richly illustrated and the reader obtains a very good idea of how, based on the archaeological evidence, these warriors dressed and what type of weapons they used during this period (and how the weapons and dress developed over the period). This is the book's strength. The book also does a very good job at examining the ethnological movements of peoples throughout this region during the period albeit it does lack maps that would have been a great benefit in this respect.

Where the book is weak, however, is its coverage of the military organizational structures of these societies, tactics and strategies? However, as even the author points out, these are not known and the current academic material covering them is more hypothesis and speculation than anything based on hard evidence, whether it is hard archaeological evidence or the mythology or literature of the time.

All and all a very good succinct very up-to-date overview of the subject.

Archaeology, reconstructions and descriptions
By JPS
This Osprey publication may seem a bit unusual, because it largely lacks the historical context that can be found in most other volumes of the series. A fairer assessment would be to recognize the choice that the authors have deliberately made to concentrate on archaeological findings, to describe these and to use them as the basis for their reconstructions. To a large extent, their alternatives were limited simply because there were no primary written sources that they could make use of.

This is not to say that there is no discussion of the origins of the various waves of "Indo-Europeans", or the Cretans, for instance. Only that it is kept to a minimum with the authors, for instance, also clearly making the point that the existence of the "Minoan sea power" is nothing more than a theory dating back to Evans, even if it is a plausible and logical one, as they also show. Also interesting is the explanation given for the collapse of Minoan power. Again, this is a theory, to the extent that we do not know "know" for sure in the absence of written sources, but it is a rather plausible one. One last important point is that by the time of the "Trojan War" (assuming, again, that it really took place as indicated by Homer), Crete was divided into Achaean principalities with the Achaeans having conquered the island and ruling it for a couple of centuries

The main (and high!) value of this book lies in its descriptions centred on the various findings of pieces of arms and armour, on one hand, and the rather gorgeous reconstructions through the plates. At times, the descriptions of assorted arms and armour may read as some museum catalogue but with the added advantage that they are a selection from findings all over Greece and the Aegean. They are also superbly illustrated by sets of pictures and drawings.

Then there are the colour plates themselves which, when superb as they are here, are one of the main attractions of every Osprey volume. I was particularly impressed by the one of page 57 titled "the Achaean conquest of Knossos, 1430 BC" with the characters "feeling" so real that I had the impression that they were about to leap of the page! More generally, there is a rather good interaction between the plates, the pictures and drawings and the main text.

I also had two relatively minor points to raise - I cannot call them "issues". One was about the bibliography, where the authors referenced multiple and rather specialized titles but did not seem to recommend any book that could provide more context about the period. For instance, I was surprised not to find a reference to Oliver Dickinson's "The Aegean Bronze Age", although another of his works is cited. Maybe space constraints obliged the authors to make some hard choices and leave that one (and a few others perhaps) out. Another little quibble is a tendency to write about the various periods and using the rather specialised and hermetic acronyms (such as LH, LM etc...) without always providing the corresponding dates. The non-specialist reader is then obliged to "jump back and forth" at times to see what period is being covered exactly.

Anyway, these were quibbles more than anything else and the title was worth a solid four stars for me.

Pelasgians and Minoans
By McGuinnThompsonKaukonenVerlaineCarthyBassanaStephensSteveJonesBobbyBeausoleil
Finally someone has tackled the dodgy question of weapons, armor, ships and tactics in the pre-Hellenic Aegean. The mainland, Crete and the Cyclades are all covered in this wonderful book. While some of the inferences were come to inductively, I feel no doubt that they are on the mark.

Into the Hidden Valley, by Stuart Blackburn

The sins of the father ... Charles Taylor was raised in the typical British manner of the late Victorian era: distant from his father, George, a civil servant in India. The two grow closer as Charles ages, but after his father’s untimely death, he finds himself on a path of discovery about George’s life and his role in the pacification of tribes near the Tibetan border, especially his father’s encounter with a powerful shaman and his son. A past as hidden as the Apatani valley, which protects its secrets well. Praise for Into the Hidden Valley: With echoes of A Passage to India, this is a wonderful new addition to the literature of British India. Blackburn gives us vivid descriptions of the land, people's faces, their customs, their dress, their families and their emotions, lending insight into the motivations of both colonial officials and tribesmen. His beautiful prose helps the reader grasp the misunderstandings and clash of worldviews behind the tragic violence of the Raj. A gripping and delicious read. – Carla Petievich, Visiting Professor: South Asia Institute About the Author: Stuart Blackburn was born American, but is a man of the world. Experiencing India first hand in Peace Corp, Stuart would later go on to earn a PhD in Indian culture and folklore. A teacher for many years, Stuart’s writing remained in the academic field until 2014 when his first novel , Murder in Melur, was published in India.

Very much enjoyed this book by Stuart Blackburn
By Cathy E. Cordova
Very much enjoyed this book by Stuart Blackburn. Attention to detail in his writings is an education in itself. The story kept me intrigued about the characters from beginning to the end. The bond between the characters in the book was profound.

Inter-culturally brilliant!
By Gary Tartakov
Much in vein that proved so affecting in his Murder in Melur, Stuart Blackburn's Into the Hidden Valley proceeds through finely etched details in vividly evoked scenes that carry the texture and look of northeastern India as only one who has lived there and spent extended periods of time among the people could muster. The historical context is the late nineteenth century English empire's intrusion into the tribal world for which it was not prepared, as the narrative brings together men and women swimming in the counter-currents of their own quite different universes, just as the two collide. On one side we see the newly minted Indian Civil Service officer struggling for honor and promotion, while on the other an Apatani shaman seeks a precarious survival. Blackburn has an eye and an ear for the people of both these worlds, and a storyteller's voice to convey the tale of their meeting. The location is India's northeast on the borders of Tibet and Burma, the territory is that of Achebe's Things Fall Apart.

Blackburn's strategy and his most striking accomplishment is in his plotting of the convergence of these two so-distinctly separate social nebulae in their incoherent collision. Each a fully developed social world with its own ritualized clockwork of social institutions and personal roles, gliding implacably on its own inertial gravity into the other.

This is how it worked, here recognized, portrayed, and evoked as only someone familiar with both of these universes could. As the bewildered individuals on each side collide in the at-once terrible and incomprehendible disaster of the colonial encounter. This is least-explored model for the continuing western imperial effort to bring the bring the rest of the world into conformity with our political system's economic interests, as those with the intimate knowledge of one lever of power or another scramble to stay afloat within their own world, while creating unfathomable havoc in the ones they cross.

Many years ago I remember the dull pain I experienced at my first viewing of François Truffaut's film, Jules and Jim, as the film ends in tragedy with a failed telephone call, as one of the main character's tries desperately, and in vain, to reach the other, who refuses to take his message, crucial though is. The scenario, as I remember it, has the frantic caller in one frame, and the one he's reaching out to, unable to answer in another.

I don't know at this moment if I remember it correctly, only that that was the meaning of the film for me at that moment: how impossible the world is when our communication is broken, how painful. Though that was over half a century ago and before I'd ever taken a step into the Indian subcontinent, the experience remains with me, as one that in many ways has colored my long years of searching there and here for an understanding of who or what we are in this world of so many different peoples and cultures. Each of us interpreting what we see in the language we know while so often communicating in words that have different meanings on one side and on the other. One's hand reaching out in hope taken by the other in fear, exchanges too multivalent to decipher: fractured communications.

The great success of Stuart Blackburn's venture into the hidden valley of the Apatani — and the slim records and photographs that survive of the imperial British intrusion there on which he constructs his tale — is to bring us enough understanding of the worlds colliding there at the end of the nineteenth century to feel the fracture as we witness the fallout on either side as the communications intended to bridge the gulf between them are broken or refused.

A Literary Masterpiece
By LINDA A. ROOT
I withheld reviewing this book earlier because I am a board member of a competition in which it was entered, and I read it along with all of the other entries. This is true literature at its finest--reminiscent of the works of Joseph Conrad. The writing is masterful, the visual imagery is exquisite, and the message is universal. It is the tale of two good men from very different cultures, and with different value systems, attempting to reach out to one another in spite of insurmountable odds.
This is one of the finest pieces of literature I have read, and to give an idea of what that means, I have over a 1600 books on my Kindle, and half again that many on other readers, and three crowded bookcases covering just the library I have accumulated in the past five years.
