The regents exams are getting easier and easier, so this book is good but pretty useless. But you can't blame them and they did a good job. The vocab section is more than you need on the exam, but it is helpful for the next level course in Spanish, so its not useless. Don't buy the old exams- they are harder and unrealistic to the new ones. They did a good job but you don't need the book unless you teach yourself Spanish

Cavalli-Sforza has been the leading architect of a revolution (even a paradigm shift) in human genetics since the 1960s. Because of his work, geneticists no longer think that the human species is divided into color-coded races. A geneticist well known for his pioneering DNA studies on variations between populations over the millennia, Stanford University professor emeritus Cavalli-Sforza presents numerous startling or controversial findings in this dryly written but provocative survey of human evolution. Modern humans most likely originated in Africa, and arrived in Europe only around 42,000 years ago, rapidly displacing the dominant Neanderthal hominid species, he believes. Perhaps 20,000 years before this displacement, waves of modern humans migrated from Africa to Asia, then on to Australia; Europe came next, while America was probably the last continent to be occupied by Homo sapiens sapiens, he concludes. By correlating global studies of genetic markers with archeological evidence and patterns of linguistic change, Cavalli-Sforza attempts to track the earliest mass migrations, the spread of agriculture outward from the Middle East, cultural and genetic exchanges between prehistoric peoples and the birth of Indo-European languages. Much of this is conjectural, but he is confident enough to state that, from a genetic standpoint, "it appears that Europeans are about two-thirds Asians and one-third African." Moreover, "Black Americans have... an average of 30 percent of White admixture" in their genes, he reports. From the vantage point of DNA, according to Cavalli-Sforza, the idea of separate races is unscientific and fallacious, as different ethnic groups display superficial variations in body surface, mere outward adaptations to different climates--an opinion shared by a growing number of molecular biologists. Illustrated with maps and diagrams, this study sheds light on the origins of Finns, Hungarians, Basques, Native Americans, Asian Indians and other diverse limbs of the human family tree. (May)

Allied with archaeology and linguistics, genetics backs up the theory of an African beginning about 150,000 years ago, an initial radiation to Asia, and thence to the ends of the earth. Cavalli-Sforza's views are here streamlined for jargon-free appeal. He summarizes the fundamental principles of evolution, then discusses several specific human genes that he argues trace migrations millennia ago, namely those controlling the A, B, and O blood types, that controlling the blood's RH factor, and mitochondrial DNA. Lest he be thought dogmatic about genetic tracers, Cavalli-Sforza repeatedly asks whether the genes of living people can really piece together human evolution and presents maps and statistics that convince him they can. He detects, too, a genetic concordance with linguistic evidence. Cavalli-Sforza, an emeritus with original views and an open mind, has shaped evolutionary theories, making this condensation of his corpus of work an important popular work on the subject. Professor Cavalli-Sforza'a book "Genes, Peoples, and Languages" is a fascinating history of humankind based on genetics, archeology, and linguistics. It addresses topics, which are of interest to many people who are starting to look into their genealogy in more global aspects. Dr. Cavalli-Sforza is a Professor Emeritus of Genetics at Stanford University. Together with Peter Underhill and Peter Oefner they have published extensively on detecting DNA variation in the Y chromosome and developing markers to study the evolution of modern humans.
The book delves into genetics and linguistics issues, which are explained well despite the multidisciplinary approach. A must read for students in genetics, history, linguistiscs, and even genetic counseling.

Since the appearance of this book nearly ten years ago, the sequencing of the human gene has greatly increased the specific knowledge of the Journey of Man, as Spencer Wells, a disciple of Cavalli-Sforza, calls it, as revealed by evolutionary biology. But Cavalli-Sforza traces not only the genetic pathways through alleles and phenotypes but also the evolution of cultures and languages in a unified treatment of the three. Key concepts such as genetic drift are treated in a readable fashion, and differences in time and spatial evolution of cultures, languages, and genetics are explained. It's an immensely satisfying read.

Loving the alien

This is the second book in the series and the only one I had read. Now, I’m willing to get the first one. It kept my attention all the time with the good narrations and dialogs making me read it non- stop until the end. This is a futuristic world psi-fiction book that made my imagination flow with good images. Loretta Franklin was looking for a job in New York City. Her grandmother had been taking care of her sister and brother and now was time for her to take charge. While she was leaving the building, after the job interview, a bomb exploded. The Human Liberation Coalition group was attacking and demanding that the Draconian leave the planet or the terrorist would kill fertile women. She was a fertile woman and fearing being hurt she was hiding when Draconian General Mylash, found her. Mylash was attracted to the human woman and felt the pull of a mate immediately. He never thought he would find his true mate and had been ready to be without a mate for all his life. Loretta was not part of the lottery to match human women with draconians. With the struggle with the terrorist and the war ahead would she accept him as her mate? How could he win her? Loretta’s doubts made her struggle against her feelings. She was feeling the attraction toward the alien warrior but they were different species and she feared she would have to leave her world behind. How they were going to deal with this? The book was very entertaining with a mating between different species being the male protagonist a dragon shifter from outer space. I was touched by Mylash pursue of his mate’s acceptance. He was a very good character. It had a good pace with suspense, strange romance and action with the terrorist group and lots of hot sex. Liked the story development and the character’s chemistry. Received the ARC for an honest review.

when your dragon has other plans

a terrorist group made a huge mess of Loretta's plans. she was just in the building for a job interview, not to be taken hostage and threatened to be killed because an out space race of dragon shifters has chosen earth to "provide" them with willing woman to mate with.
Mylash would rather stay at home and fight at the front but the big chief made them go ahead with the mating excursion. ugh he couldn't see the appeal of taking a human female as a mate, he wasn't interested at all. things on earth are taking a turn for the worse when the news of the attack reaches their ship. Mylash is sent down to take care of things. never before had the dragons shown their real power to humans but now they were wanting to kill their own females so dragons couldn't mate them. it kind of forced the issue. Mylash is taken by surprise when he finds a single young female huddled in a corner, not sure what to make of it initially, he's quickly realizing his dragon had other plans with this particular female!
how is he going to convince her that they're meant to be? the only good thing is, she wasn't in the available group so he can hide her while they make their mind up!

a lovely read. Mylash is upfront and doesn't beat around bush about what he wants and what he wants is Loretta, only Loretta isn't so meek and willing as he'd like her to be.

shifters from outer space, i like the twist given in this story about the how and the why. a fresh look on things makes for a wonderful story!

Too much of the same plot

Yeesh. Ok, this is book 2 and I liked the first book better and it got a 3 star rating. This read a little too much like the first book. Except some things have changed of course and characters were different. I did feel the familiarity though when reading it. No new information...not really. Female character Loretta was just too easy to sway! I mean she did panic briefly but that was over. They mated but not fully and she panics again. Wishy washy. Mylash didnt even want a mate at first til he saw her. Its hard to go with the flow with such characters! He's all gruff at first and does a complete 180 after meeting Loretta. He softens too fast for me. Just seems unbelievable considering the same guy says leave humans to their stupidity a few hours earlier. I dunno I am just not digging the series that much. Maybe if the characters were written better and seeing how its a different couple in each book that the stories are different but so far its more of the same. I've read a lot of sci-fi short romance stories in a series also but they do differ quite a bit. These are just too similar. I really wanted to like the story...really bad because the blurb was really interesting but fell short of expectations. I have 2 more stories in this series to read and I sincerely hope they are better.

Dim Sum Lite

This is a REALLY bad book. I was very disappointed in the complete lack of authenticity of the recipes. That they should be simplified is something I've come to expect, but that they should be so inauthentic is inexcusable in this day and age when Chinese ingredients are so widely available--in supermarkets, Chinatowns, or online. Here are some examples:

In the section on ingredients, Ms. Liley includes (Vietnamese) rice paper wrappers (although the Chinese do in a very few cases use a type of rice paper wrapper, it bears no resemblance whatever to the hard, glassy Vietnamese kind); she states erroniously that Spring roll wrappers are made of rice flour (see Eileen Yin-Fei Lo's "The Dim Sum Dumpling Book" for the authentic recipe and method); and she labels as wonton wrappers, which are square and egg-based, potsticker/gyoza wrappers, which are round and water-based.

In the recipe for Pearl Balls (p.26), she lists short-grain rice instead of glutinous rice for the coating, and suggests that the rice be soaked for 30 minutes. I have been making pearl balls since I was 16 years old, and you *must* use glutinous rice, because even short grain non-glutionous rice won't soften in the relatively short steaming. Also, the rice needs at least 1.5 or 2 hours soaking.

Finally, Ms Liley in recipe after recipe suggests fish sauce (widely used in Vietnamese, Thai, and Filipino cooking, but never in mainstream Chinese) as, presumably, a substitute for light soy sauce, since most Chinese recipes specify light soy sauce (or a combination of light and dark soy sauces) for fish or seafood-based dishes.

The photos are exquisite, but what good are glamourous photos when the content is so falsified? Better to take the extra money and buy Lo's dim sum book, or the book "Dim Sum" by Rhoda Yee (the text is excruciating, but the recipes are good and really work), or for those who really want to get into this in depth, the dim sum books by Wei-Chuan Publishing.

Very Poor

There is almost nothing to commend this book. There are only 40 recipes (excluding the 7 recipes for dipping sauces) and none of them are very good in my opinion. There are illustrations for each recipe, which is usually a plus, but in this case even the pictures were not very appetizing for the most part. I found very little in the book that looked much like anything one would find at a dim sum restaurant and there are too many recipes which recommend store bought won-ton wrappers even for steamed items. Quite frankly, it strikes me that the author has perused a few cookery books and thrown together this production without any real understanding of, or expertise in this particular style of cuisine.

westernized dim sum recipes

For the price, this book gives less recipes than any you would find on any ethnic food site! Almost half the recipes for dim sum involved DEEP-FRYING. For anyone who has actually experienced the traditional brunch menu in chinatown, you'll know the vast majority of dishes are STEAMED. Except for the a scant handful of the basics (i.e., pork buns, shrimp dumplings, etc.), i didn't recognize ANY of these recipes! somewhat of an oddity, given the fact that i am actually chinese. it was particularly galling to see someone try to pawn a glossy, overly westernized 'chinese' cookbook as an authentic representation of dim sum.
while it's understandable that most people who buy this book will not be chinese, this is NOT the book to get if you want to duplicate the dishes you've tasted before.
And why did i give it 1 star instead of the 0 it deserved? it has nice pictures.

Sacred Maya world

An amazing collection of archeological artifacts await the reader who is able to locate this gem of a book. Originally published to accompany a traveling exhibit that boasted the largest collection of Maya ritual life ever assembled., the book reflects the mysteries of the Maya.The artifacts collected and displayed from over 3,000 collected are those that were found deep within the waters of the sacred well or cenote located near the city of Chichen Itza("mouth of the well of the Itza"). This cenote, deep in the jungle of the Yucatan, is like a mini lake, with sheer vertical walls where the Mayans once stood to offer goods or human life to their gods. Having visited the cenote on a trip to the Yucatan once, it made for one of those memorable occasions that last a life time, a step back in time to a world steeped deep in ancient religion prior to the arrival of the Europeans. The cenote was a sacrificial center where the Mayans paid their spiritual debts and honored their gods with gifts made of gold, jade, copper, pottery, wood, textiles, copal and other materials including the ultimate human offering. The objects collected in this book number over 300 and are detailed in full color and black and white. The magnificent pieces are primarily from the Late Classicperiod(A. D. 690-725) through and including the Postclassic period(A.D. 900-1539). The text that accompanies this beautiful book is highly informative but not in an overly scholarly way. The descriptions of the figures sheds light on the subject for the arm chair archeologist in easly understood language without esoteric jargon. Included is a history on the collector, Edward H. Thompson, beginning with his lowering of a bucket in 1904, the burning of his "museum" after the Mexican Revolution and the settlement of the Mexican Supreme Court in favor of Thompson's heirs after his death which allowed the Harvard Peabody Museum to publish this book. Besides the absolute stunning beauty of the creations offered and sheer abundance of objects, the salvaged intact pieces are amazing to have survived so many hundreds of years in the depths of the cenote. At it's height the site rivaled a pilgrimage destination similar to Jerusalem or Rome. This is one of those books that can be viewed over and over again for inspiration or reflection on the arts and rituals of the Maya. Highly recomended for archeology , art or history buffs that want a glimse into a seldom seen collection of pieces that were unexhibited in the Peabodty Museum for over seventy years after being brought up from the silt in the cenote in the early 1900's. These are truly treasures that should not be missed if one is interested in the Maya and the Sacred Well.

Gobe can be very wordy and hard to read. Fortunately, he has little insights section at the end of every chapter and summarize the main points for you. It's an excellent book on how design affects marketing and consumer behavior.

As an Enterprise Architecture manager, I find this book only geared towards governance.
Although given we spend a lot of time on governance, it is pretty rudimentary and unchallenging subject in a field where there are lot of things to learn.
It has very little practical guidance. Overpriced book, avoind if you can.

Excellent, Practical insight into naming

I just finished reading Taylor's book.
Pros:
1. Concise, non-consultantese writing style. He gets to the point--no fluff like most business authors (most of whom seem to feel more words is better). He is also rather witty--I enjoy a writer who can add a little humor.
2. Clear steps on the porcess of naming such that you can--gasp!--try it yourself
3. Excellent information on the types of naming categories--with detailed exmaples.
4. Great info on potential pitfalls--including the very real issue of managing people throughout the naming porcess, as well as other challenges

One minor con:
1. Some visual displays would have been a nice touch. He writes well about the importance of tag lines (apparently called "strap lines" in the UK) and images--some displays to show that would have been nice.

Overall, an excellent book. I read it over a weekend, and got everything I need from it.

Worthwhile and A Good Read

As a non-marketing type who had never named anything but humans, I found this book helpful, easy to understand, and fun to read. It's a process that is an art vs. a science but the author gives you plenty of example to fuel your own creative process. Whether you're a one-woman naming machine or working with a team, valuable information!

I recommend this book to anyone. Whether your a new believer or you simply need to be reminded of what God promised you. If your wanting know more of who God is, read this book. Personally I've been struggling lately, after reading Gods Promises it has lifted me up and helped to rekindle a fire I felt was withering away.

I had been looking for a book just like this for years. I went through several others that just weren't what I was looking for. I saw this through his website and wrote and asked him for a copy...which he promptly sent me so that I could review it on my blog. He also sent me his testimony in the form of a book and I was really thankful for both of them. So generous! I really enjoyed reading his testimony! The book starts with the very IMPORTANT explanation of how all the promises are ours. Very necessary to understand the reason behind this book. Then the book is broken up into the Old Testament and New Testament and the promises are Chronological. So very helpful.
