I'm not convinced that the author's insights are new revelations for this genre of books. His acknowledgement of common pitfall and specific advise, especiall in branding and essay writing are worth the cost of the book.

Good Samples & Analysis

Different from other essay collection books, it straightly starts with real sample essays & analysis, and both sample and analysis are great. What I like most of this essay, it removes the boring parts of some general direction on "how to write essays." Instead it has analysis of each essay, and it helps me to design my essay greatly. However, if someone needs the guideline of writing essay by each topic, he or she may need one more book.

Thoughts about this book

This book shows you application essays of people who have been admitted to HBS. The editors also comment each essay.

Overall, I'd say the book offers a pretty good overview, it may trigger some thoughts and give indications as to what the application office might be looking for and the characteristics of a typical HBS student. I like the fact that the editors comment both strengths and weaknesses of each essay.

Some 'issues':

1. The book is created by the Harbus news corporation, an independent nonprofit entity, not the Harvard Business School. Since the essays were not chosen/commented by the admissions office, the sample may not properly represent typical entries (perhaps only the 'best ones', perhaps only ones by students/friends who the editor personally knows etc), nor the factors that actually determine admission (for sure they show factors that _the editors BELIEVE_ are important for admission).

2. You will not see any examples of how _not_ to write your essay. Such a contrasting view would have been useful for figuring out exactly what the admission office is looking for, what they want to learn about you as an applicant/potential member of the community.

3. You will not see examples of essays of ppl who were admitted to other comparable institutions, hence it is difficult to figure out exactly what make HBS students different from typical students at i.e. at Kellogg, Stanford, Wharton.

Usuage: I'd have a look at this book before writing my HBS apps, then contrast my impression of HBS students and the HBS community with what I have learned about the students and community of other schools, following which I'd use this knowledge to properly design essays that match my impression of what the adm office wants to learn about me. With some drafts at hand, I'd show my essays to an alumni/discuss with him/her how to go about/tweak the application.

Asia for Outsiders...

Certainly plenty in this book to keep the new comer to Asia fascinated and on their toes but very much written for the "expat" manager ie Westerner relocating to Asia as a new kid in town. Not so frequent nowadays where Asia produces plenty of highly skilled experienced local managers with international experience.
An entertaining and valuable read for those experienced in Asia as well as newcomers to this fascinating region.

Managers in Asian companies should read

This is a well researched book. Backman is well known in the region for his work on the dark side of doing business in Asia. The authors didn't shy away from writing about the prevalent corruption in many of the Asian countries. Many would say this book is a valuable resource for foreign company in Asia. I would argue Big in Asia is a must read for many of the senior managers in Asian companies. Many of the practices like promotion based on personal relationship, family member in senior posts regardless of ability, lack of candor during negotiation...etc. Like it or not, at some point this kind of inefficiency will make it impossible for Asian companies to compete in the world stage. Sure, developing relationship (guanxi) is important, and not necessary a bad thing, but if it takes one company three lunches, five dinners and a trip to Disneyland over 12 months to sign a contract and another half the time to do it. Sooner or later, some smart entrepreneurial Asian manager will figure out the more efficient way to do business.

The strategies in the book are presented like case studies. In an attempt to lighten up the material, the readers are served with many back-handed jabs such as,

"When a Korean loses his job he kills himself. When a Thai loses his job, he kills his wife."

"Aggrieved ex-employees in Asia tend to be more interested in revenge than in the West." (not counting postal workers, of course)

Commenting on how the new generation of Chinese are more entrepreneurial and better educated, the author added, "But they are gaining a reputation for greater venality than previous generations."

"Lies, damned lies and statistics, but in China it is mostly the first two."

... not that it makes them less true, I just find them annoying.

The authors are not based in Asia, and have never run a company or any business (as fas as I can tell). For a more personal, hands in the ground view, I recommend 1) Getting Rich First: Life in a Changing China, by Duncan Hewitt. Get the UK edition if you have a choice. 2) The way of the dragon : a guide for Australians doing business in China, by Gavin Crombie. The first is not a business book per se, but an intimate account of life in China. Hewitt spent the last decades living in China. He speak the language, know the people and its culture.

An integrated set of solutions to take control of your life

This book contains advice that I personally give others, plus much more. The text is well-researched, accurate, and complete. What Ms. Basset says draws on a wide range of authoritative literature, and her advice works. Many of the pearls of wisdom in this book have stood the test of time; others are newer, yet producing positive results.

Rather than hit on some "magic bullet," the author provides an integrated approach to gaining and maintaining control over one's life. So, this work is not some "new age gimmick" that you'll give up on after reaching frustration. It's real information for real people who are trying to make it in the real world, despite real problems that seem to defy solution.

I read many books, and this is the first one in a long time in which the author provides diet advice and there aren't any errors. It was like that throughout the book, though--everything was accurate. No guesswork or tapping into poor information sources.

The one thing I don't like about this book is the author's repeated use of "In order to," rather than simply "To" (these mean the same thing). She would make Strunk and White proud if, in a future revision, she does a mass search and replace. This style gaffe doesn't ruin the book, especially considering the enormous value this book brings, but fixing it would improve the reading experience.

In the martial arts, students are taught that the most powerful enemy you will ever face is the one inside you. That is also where your most powerful ally resides. This philosophy may seem simple, but it plays out in many layers and permutations. This philosophy lies at the heart of this book, and Ms. Basset lays out a means of applying it so the reader can gain true happiness, personal security, and fulfillment.

Ms. Basset's main approach is that of identifying "your core story" and then moving forward from there. What she's referring to are your deepest-held beliefs and how you came to hold them. As with everything else she discusses, this comes from established practice that has stood the test of time. This particular concept forms the basis for talk therapy (a general term for various kinds of psychotherapy).

Talk therapy has proven itself to be very effective, partly because it gets you to confront some basic facts about yourself. The weakness of talk therapy is the person under therapy must have a desire to identify and solve his/her problems (the other options being to take drugs, just stay messed up, or--as is more often the case--a combination of the two). So if you want to gain control of events in your life rather than let them control you, this book should be very helpful because it's on solid ground. If you're fairly apathetic, then this book probably won't make any difference. Probably nothing else will, either.

The text contains explanations, examples and personal stories (many from famous people). It also contains a daily "Pro-active Action" item that threads its way through the book until you get to the last one for Day 21. Interestingly, the book does not contain a bibliography. However, readers of the books that were the sources for this book will see familiar facts and tidbits (no, Ms. Bassett did not plagiarize; she merely drew facts from authoritative sources).

This book consists of twelve chapters in 265 pages. Note that 12 of those pages are chapter title pages. The first six chapters are devoted to describing the problem, thus Part I is titled, "The Problem." As you may have already guessed, Part II is titled, "The Solution."

I found this text easy to read (the exception being the style gaffe mentioned earlier). It's upbeat, yet serious. It's upbeat, because the author's message is that you can do this (and here's how). It's serious, because the research behind it is obviously exhaustive. Fortunately, the reader isn't left feeling exhausted--quite the opposite, actually.

If you're having problems dealing with life's constant stream of annoyances, this book can help you sort them out and slow that stream to a trickle. Or perhaps you know someone who is always in crisis; if so, this book would be an ideal gift.

Clear, concise, and usable

Lucinda Bassett has written a thoughtful book about how to overcome anxiety. She gives practical, usable techniques that, once applied, can diffuse panic and chronic anxiety. She encourages personal responsibility and soul searching so we can understand how we allow anxiety to take over our lives, which empowers the reader to then use that responsibility and power to overcome it's debilitating effects on our jobs, our relationships and our joy.

Fantastic book. Highly recommend for those struggling with fear, anxiety and depression. It is powerful to know that the "solution" is available to all and is not subject to one's history, current circumstances, and/or perceived future.

About the Author
Duncan Green is Head of Research at Oxfam. He has worked as a teacher, journalist, and researcher throughout Latin America. He is the author of many books; his most recent one is From Poverty to Power. Duncan lives in Brixton, South London, with his wife, two children and two cats.

Sue Branford worked as a foreign correspondent in Latin America in the 1970s and 1980s. Among other publications, she has worked for the Financial Times and the Guardian. On returning to the United Kingdom, she became an editor and program maker on Latin America for the BBC World Service. She is currently an editor at Latin America Bureau.

Green's textbook remains a good one, but the Kindle edition I received does ...

Green's textbook remains a good one, but the Kindle edition I received does not do the book justice because it lacks the graphics of the printed volume. The information from the boxes and pullouts is there but not offset -- just stuck in the middle of the other text. Perhaps the Kindle Fire version is colorful and organizes its graphics like the printed version, or perhaps the book is carried on Google Books or in some other format that will carry the full impact of the printed edition.

This book gave me a great historical analysis of Lain America for which I was looking.. The analysis was along several tracts such as economic development, conflicts between the indigenous people and the wealthy and religion. This is a very useful book for understanding the very rich and diverse. It does not flow like a well written novel but is packed with enlightening facts. I definitely recommend if you are visiting any of Latin America.

Using the "the Negro Problem" in African American literature as a point of departure, this book focuses on the profound impact that racism had on the literary imagination of black Americans, specifically those in the South. Although the South has been one of the most enduring sites of criticism in American Studies and in American literary history, Johnson argues that it is impossible to consider what the "South" and what "southernness" mean as cultural references without looking at how black women have contributed to and contested any unified definition of that region. Johnson challenges the homogeneity of a "white" South and southern cultural identity by recognizing how fictional and historical black women are underacknowledged agents of cultural change. Johnson regards the South as a cultural region that (re)constructs black womanhood, but she also considers how black womanhood have transformed the South. Sherita L. Johnson is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Southern Mississippi. She has published several encyclopedia articles about African American literature and culture. She served as a guest editor for a special issue of The Southern Quarterly, "'My Southern Home': The Life and Literature of 19th Century Southern Black Writers."
