As Louise Erdrich's magical novel The Antelope Wife opens, a cavalry soldier pursues a dog with an Ojibwa baby strapped to its back. For days he follows them through "the vast carcass of the world west of the Otter Tail River" until finally the dog allows him to approach and handle the child--a girl, not yet weaned, who latches onto his nipples until, miraculously, they begin to give milk. In another kind of novel, this might be a metaphor. But this is the fictional world of Louise Erdrich, where myth is woven deeply into the fabric of everyday life. A famous cake tastes of grief, joy, and the secret ingredient: fear. The tie that binds the antelope wife to her husband is, literally, the strip of sweetheart calico he used to yoke her hand to his. Legendary characters sew beads into colorful patterns, and these patterns become the design of the novel itself.

The Antelope Wife centers on the Roys and the Shawanos, two closely related Ojibwa families living in modern-day Gakahbekong, or Minneapolis. Urban Indians of mixed blood, they are "scattered like beads off a necklace and put back together in new patterns, new strings," and Erdrich follows them through two failed marriages, a "kamikaze" wedding, and several tragic deaths. But the plot also loops and circles back, drawing in a 100-year-old murder, a burned Ojibwa village, a lost baby, several dead twins, and another baby nursed on father's milk.

The familiar Erdrich themes are all here--love, family, history, and the complex ways these forces both bind and separate the generations, stitching them into patterns as complex as beadwork. At least initially, this swirl of characters, narratives, time lines, and connections can take a little getting used to; several of the story lines do not match up until the book's conclusion. But in the end, Erdrich's lovely, lyrical language prevails, and the reader succumbs to the book's own dreamlike logic. As The Antelope Wife closes, Erdrich steps back to address readers directly for the first time, and the moment expands the book's elaborate patterns well beyond the confines of its pages. Erdrich (Love Medicine, etc.) embroiders this theme in a sensuous novel that brings her back to the material she knows best, the emotionally dislocated lives of Native Americans who try to adhere to the tribal ways while yielding to the lure of the general culture. In a beautifully articulated tale of intertwined relationships among succeeding generations, she tells the story of the Roy and the Shawano families and their "colliding histories and destinies." The narrative begins like a fever dream with a U.S. cavalry attack on an Ojibwa village, the death of an old woman who utters a fateful word, the inadvertent kidnapping of a baby and a mother's heartbreaking quest. The descendants of the white soldier who takes the baby and of the bereaved Ojibwa mother are connected by a potent mix of tragedy, farce and mystical revelation. As time passes, there is another kidnapping, the death of a child and a suicide. Fates are determined by a necklace of blue beads, a length of sweetheart calico and a recipe for blitzkuchen. Though the saga is animated by obsessional love, mysterious disappearances, mythic legends and personal frailties, Erdrich also works in a comic vein. There's a dog who tells dirty jokes and a naked wife whose anniversary surprise has an audience. Throughout, Erdrich emphasizes the paradoxes of everyday life: braided grandmas who follow traditional ways and speak the old language also wear eyeliner and sneakers. In each generation, men and women are bewitched by love, lust and longing; they are slaves to drink, to carefully guarded secrets or to the mesmerizing power of hope. Though the plot sometimes bogs down from an overload of emotional complications, the novel ultimately celebrates the courage of following one's ordained path in the universe and meeting the challenges of fate. It is an assured example of Erdrich's storytelling skills.

Erdrich is back on track with this novel

I was disappointed in Louise Erdrich's previous novel, *Tales of Burning Love*, which I thought was overly sensationalistic--a bit "Hollywood" for my taste. In *The Antelope Wife*, however, she has returned to an approach that is reminiscent of her first and most triumphant novel, *Love Medicine*. She writes in a style that may be difficult for some readers to accept--no,it's not "obscure" in the sense of a James Joyce novel, but she changes voices, time frames, and situations constantly. The result is a tapestry-like narrative that is uniquely effective, in my view. Erdrich has a way with words that is rare in today's literary world, despite the countless novels that are published annually. Moreover, because of her own Native American heritage, she is able to convey with incredible effectiveness the realities of past and present life and consciousness within those Indian cultures with which she is familiar.
This is a fine work, one that makes me look forward all the more to Louise Erdrich's next book.

In the event that the student is not familiar with music theory, an appendix clarifies the basics of musical notation. In addition to 201 written exercises for the Charango solo, the method includes 23 South American folk music classics arranged for Charango and guitar accompaniment. It thus serves as both a pedagogical tool and a source of performance repertoire. The musical scores included in the method are accompanied by a CD of recorded exercises and a free audio download of repertoire played by recognized Chilean instrumentalists.

Essential!

Any serious charanguista who isn't lucky enough to take lessons should have this book! I've been looking for a book like this for 10 yrs! Has everything you'd ever want from a Charango method book:

1. Transcriptions of traditional rhythms
2. Comes w/ CD of professional playing the various exercises and songs
3. Transcriptions of actual songs to add to your repertoire
4. Clear, precise instructions in both Spanish and English.

This is a must-have for any serious charanguista wanting to improve skill level.

Highly recommended!

Got this method after having a charango for about 6 months. It is amazing! I've worked through method books for several other instruments, including guitar and saxophone, and this is among the best written methods I've ever used. The layout and order of exercises couldn't have been done any better, and the repertoire is fantastic. Only complaint is that the download of the repertoire doesn't include versions of the songs without charango (or with the charango panned to one side) - would be nice to practice them without having to play over another charango.

Best book available - and excellent at that

I'm still working my way though this book - and there's a lot to go through - and am very pleased. The presentation is very clear and thorough, supported by audio examples of every lesson on the accompanying CD. The book covers in detail three basic rhythmic patterns - Huayno, Bailecito, and Cueca - and variations. Included are exercises and popular songs illustrating these styles. It also covers various strum and finger picking techniques. About half the book is devoted to a repertoire, which appears advanced. You can download a CD's worth of music playing these pieces. The book is in Spanish and English, with the two languages side by side. The emphasis is on Andean music and styles, and why wouldn't it be? As far as I know, this is the only charango book available in English, and it is very complete. Since I'm American and plan to use the charango mainly with music I know, I am supplementing my studies with materials designed for the ukulele, since the two instruments have much in common - but they are not the same, of course. (BTW - I really like my charango and am playing quite a lot.)

A Different View

Unfortunately this story is not a new one, however, the decisions of the participants were unusual in this day. I was glad that the raw emotions were displayed and no pat answers were given. It's a book about the danger of allowing one's primary relationship with God to become "sloppy" and how this contributes in real life to compromise and great pain. It's a great story with solid instruction in the benefits of choices made to walk in forgiveness and love.

I really enjoyed reading this story. It was fast read but meaningful at the same time. Its refreshing to read a book that has a positive message at the core of the story. I can't wait to read future stories from this author.

Easy afternoon read

I found this book to be a bit too short. There is a lot of potential to expand on the plot and further develop the characters. Instead it was quick and to the point. It seemed to all happen too quickly and I found myself wanting more from the story. The story is nothing new, but I trust I'll never be in the same position, since I really don't know what I would do if I ever have to a situation like that. Nonetheless, I liked the message of forgiveness and second chances, but the writing (e.g. all caps for emphasis?) and length leave a little something to be desired.

Beautiful Book

O my God. I have never admired a math book soo much.(except my pre-cal) I am serious. It is SOO easy to undersand...No mumbo-jumbo language. Plain Simple ENGLISH.. I took it for Cal. one and Two. I had taken to take cal one during 5 week intense course. Screwed up big time. I partially blamed swokoskski cal. one book (sp?), and partially my teacher.. ofcourse I don't wanna blame myself =).. LoL.. Nevertheless.. This book was light at end of the tunnel.

Well written, well designed

I purchased this book as a remedy for my struggles with the Calculus: Early Transcendentals volume by Stewart. The two are like night and day. Stewart's exposition is, at best, of uneven quality, and all too often seems not to illuminate at all. The Anton, Bivens, and Davis (hereafter ABD) has marvelous clarity of exposition, well ordered, logical, and illuminating. The exercise sets in Stewart are apparently intended to provoke a stream of epiphanies--before having given sufficient practice to cement understanding--but fail to do so. The ABD exercises increase more linearly in difficulty, providing greater understanding and giving the student a solid grip on the concepts of the chapter. In short, ABD succeeds, and Stewart fails.

If you examine the reviews of Stewart's volume, you will find the most scathing are written by instructors who used the book. My own second semester instructor was a big Stewart fan, but I engaged her in many discussions on specific issue I found, and reviewed with her the alternate presentation in ABD; she found she agreed with me, again and again, and she was a master's candidate in math at the time.

This book is an excellent volume, if what you need is to actually understand calculus.

Good book to learn calculus

I purchased these books because these are the ones I use in my calculus AB class. They were firtst recommended by the district and I do supplement work to prepare students for the AP test, but the books have plenty of prblems to do and it is not difficult to read.

About the Author
DIRK SWANEVELDER is currently completing his doctoral studies on plant-insect interactions. In both his masters and honours degrees he worked on the genus Clivia, first investigating different tissue culture protocols for multiplying Clivia miniiata, before examining the genetics, ecology, taxonomy and distribution of the genus. He has authored numerous articles for the Clivia Society Yearbook, as well as scientific papers and is co-author of descriptions of a new species, a natural hybrid and varieties in the genus.

ROGER FISHER is a Professor of Architecture in the Department of Architecture, University of Pretoria. He has taught in the programs of architecture, landscape architecture and interior architecture for the past twenty years. His interest in the genus Clivia is as a hobbyist and as an aspect of cultural heritage. He is a member of the Clivia Society and he currently edits the Clivia Society Newsletter and is lead editor for the Clivia Society Yearbook.

And as you read you also find out lots of tips and techniques to use on your own collection. Really gets in depth on the scientific side, hybridizing and genetics. List of groups to join for more information. Good examples of plants and descriptions

If you're looking for motivation and good advice regarding a startup then this is your book. The author has a long list of examples and anecdotes to make each of his points. The book is well structured and easily navigated for future reference. Some of my own personal takeaways include;
1. understanding the true value of my business network and how to utilize it.
2. The value in finding a good lawyer while founding documents are being drafted.
3. The most important point is that with the right preparation your chance of success is better than you think.
There is so much in here for any budding entrepreneur.
