The Crossing: by Michael Connelly | Summary & Analysis
Michael Connelly, continues the Hieronymus Bosch series in The Crossing as the titular character transitions from life as a police detective to life in the private sector. Presenting a view of the police from one who has been among their number and finds himself unhappily and uneasily outside it, the novel is sure to please Connelly's long-time readers, even as it welcomes new ones into the series. The novel offers readers a thrilling, engaging tale of a man coming to terms with a new life and reassessing the one left behind.
Connelly follows Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch as, several months into a forced retirement, he is brought into the work of his half-brother, defense attorney Mickey Haller. Despite the antipathy between his former profession and Haller's, Bosch finds himself doggedly working to uncover the truth behind the killing of Alexandra Parks, a killing Haller's client stands ultimately wrongly accused of committing. That truth exposes ongoing corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department, and Bosch's efforts manage to put a stop to one iteration of that corruption, exonerating a wrongly accused man and giving Bosch cause to question his former professional pursuits. It is set largely in the Los Angeles area, with a notable excursion to Las Vegas, some months after The Burning Room.

A Must-Read
By Amazon Customer
I’m a big Michael Connelly fan. In his latest novel about Bosch, a woman gets murdered and the prime suspect is Bosch’s brother’s client. Despite Bosch’s inclinations, he soon learns there is more than meets the eye. The adjectives “fast-paced," “exciting," and “suspenseful” barely skim the surface of this book! One of the most engrossing books I’ve read in a while, I lost out on some sleep to see what happened! This summary and analysis helped fill in the gaps from reading so quickly! It had concise summaries and analyses of the text, its setting, and its major themes. It really enabled me to appreciate this addition to the series and Bosch’s character development. I would recommend it to anyone reading The Crossing!

Thoughtful companion to The Crossing
By Rachel Horon
This book not only highlights the events and details of this police thriller, but it also notes the qualities of the novel that makes it stand out. The summary is brief and does not take away the literary features that make it worth reading. I liked the review and analysis portion because it draws attention to setting and theme points that enhance the reading of the novel. The author includes them for a reason, so they should be discussed. Speaking of discussion, the end of the book is full of questions and discussion topics to share with friends or book group who also read the novel. Reading The Crossing is highly recommended, but reading this companion book makes it better.

I am such a fan of the Book*Sense companions for when I'm reading a complex book, especially if it's a part of a series. I am the type of person who likes to highlight as I read along and then go back and discuss the book later. However, I tend to get a bit fuzzy about the timeline and I've been known to confuse minor characters, especially if the names are similar. That's why the Summary portion is really helpful in giving me a nice breakdown of each chapter and anything important that happened. And then the Analysis of themes, motifs, and symbols is very helpful in giving me or a discussion group some places to dive in deeper. In this book, I never would have thought twice about motorcycles as any type of symbol, but after this companion pointed that out it made complete sense. I liked the darker tone of this book and it was interesting to read something that had a different point of view. Usually the law enforcement in a story, is the hero whether they are a sheriff, police officer, retired FBI agent or futuristic fleet. But this book chose to explore the theme of police corruption and instead points out that the law enforcers can abuse their power.
