Rachel Rubin Wolf is a freelance editor and artist. She has edited and written many fine art books for North Light, including Watercolor Secrets; Splash: The Best of Watercolor series; Strokes of Genuis: The Best of Drawing series; The Best of Wildlife Art (editions 1 and 2); The Best of Portrait Painting; Best of Flower Painting 2; The Acrylic Painter's Book of Styles and Techniques; Painting Ships, Shores & the Sea; and Painting the Many Moods of Light. She also acquired numerous fine art book projects for North Light and has contributed to magazines such as Fine Art Connoisseur and Wildlife Art.

Easy to Forget Artwork

The idea for a book of the best watercolors each year is fine but after looking through this latest annual of water media works I left rather unimpressed. The book itself is beautiful: sturdy binding, excellent visuals and easy to read print on very nice shiny paper, but it is the paintings chosen from around the country (and other parts of the world) that disappointed me. I know there are terrific painters out there and the ones that are included are not the best paintings today. Many of the paintings are either loosely painted, experimental or just not very strong.
Artists had to pay to submit their work which was juried. I would suggest the publishers have an invitation to let artists submit up to three images for free. It would attract a lot more entries and the reward would be the inclusion in the book. Artists are always having to pay fees and shelling out money. In this pathetic economy I am afraid these type books are going to become less and less impressive as accomplished painters will ignore entering to be included. (Most successful artists don't need this kind of publicity anyway.)
I would recommend buying a book or catalog of your favorite artist (if they are in print) and study their work rather than buying this book which has over 100 paintings which are on the whole rather average. There are a few paintings that are eye popping but only a few. Save your money.

Another Great Splash Book

Another great Splash book. I like this one a lot. I had read some reviews that did not like it, but I have to disagree. There are new artists in it with great paintings. Nice to see new artists as well as the "usual" ones. Would like to have a larger section on florals and less on animals. But that is just my taste. The People in Motion section is great (wish that one was longer too) but Facing the Soul takes care of that. The City Sights section is awesome. And Landscape View is wonderful. Artistic Arrangements is very good and goes beyond they typical still life arrangements. I have all the Splash Series books and look forward to the next one. My only suggestion might be to add more dialogue on each painting regarding process, colors used etc. Maybe in a future Splash could have section on abstracts? Thank you Rachel Rubin Wolf. I do recommend this book.
